G2 Esports is set to take on Team Spirit in the third quarterfinal match of the IEM Cologne Major 2026. On June 19, all eyes will be on donk and his team as they look to extend their flawless Major run and aim for their second Major title in CS2. Standing in their way is an in‑form G2 roster that has surprised fans and haters alike with their strong performances.

Day 2 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 playoffs will also feature Falcons vs Vitality. But for now, let's take an in‑depth look at the G2 vs Spirit matchup, covering head‑to‑head performances, predictions, and livestream details.

Head-to-Head Results

The core rosters of G2 Esports and Team Spirit have met seven times before, with the latter winning five of those encounters. In fact, G2 has won only four of the 17 maps they've played against Spirit, giving the CIS roster a clear upper hand heading into this matchup.

Of their seven previous meetings, four took place in 2026 — the latest being PGL Astana in May. Notably, Spirit won all four matchups with a considerable margin, conceding only one map across those series.

Taking their head‑to‑head history into account, Spirit holds the clear advantage. However, the outcome will ultimately come down to the matchday itself — form, health, and mentality will all be the deciding factors.

G2 - Can the Underdogs Keep Their Major Hopes Alive?

After spending some time away from the limelight, G2 Esports appears to be back in action. The team has experienced its share of ups and downs in recent years, and its 2026 season, in particular, has been far from stellar. However, G2 has never truly been absent from the top tier of competition.

Historically, the team has played in nearly every Major since entering the esport, even coming as close as a runner‑up finish at Stockholm 2021. Their recent results, however, have shown a dip in status. While they secured top‑4 finishes in both Majors of 2024, the 2025 season saw them struggle across various events, finishing 9th-11th in both Majors that year.

G2 appears determined to put an end to that narrative, delivering nothing short of an underdog run at the Cologne Major so far. They began their campaign in Stage 2 with a 3‑1 run, defeating M80, Monte, and BIG, while losing only to FUT. While this performance was somewhat expected, it's their Stage 3 run that has truly surprised even their most loyal fans.

Stage 3 saw G2 fight tooth and nail to survive. After falling to Falcons in their opening match, they avenged their Stage 2 loss to FUT, followed by a defeat to Aurora and a win over Legacy. Ultimately, they defeated one of the world's top‑ranked teams, NAVI, to secure a playoff spot with a 3‑2 tally.

Now, matched against a title contender like Spirit, G2 must put everything on the line. They have already proven they can overthrow any top team. And with Spirit's coaching staff crisis and the potential illness of a player, G2 has several factors they can exploit to pull off another upset.

Spirit - Can Donk Win His Second CS Major?

Team Spirit has delivered a remarkable showcase of skill throughout this Major. Their campaign began in Stage 2, where they blasted past their opposition with a perfect 3‑0 record, including wins over MIBR, BetBoom, and 9z — the latter two notably being fellow playoff teams.

Stage 3 painted a similar picture, as Spirit yet again went 3‑0. Their performance here was even more impressive, featuring wins over top‑ranked teams like NAVI and Aurora, as well as fellow playoff contender 9z. This marks a historic run for Spirit, as they are the only unbeaten team left in the tournament that has played more than one stage.

While Team Spirit is among the handful of teams capable of such a feat, their composure has been particularly surprising given the absence of their coaching staff. Now, with just three matches standing between them and the Major trophy, they face another challenge, as zont1x has reportedly fallen ill. This has not been confirmed, however, leading us to believe it won't affect their performance — though we'll have to wait until matchday to know for sure.

Despite their bad luck, Spirit has been on the front foot in every match so far. And given how impressive G2 has been at this Major, they are sure to put up a tough fight. A win against G2 would send Spirit to face the winner of Falcons vs. Vitality in the semifinals.

Strafe’s Predictions for G2 vs Spirit: Who Will Advance to the Semifinals?

Between the two sides, Team Spirit has several factors working in their favor. To begin with, they are the higher‑ranked team in this matchup (currently #1). Beyond that, Spirit also carries significant momentum, having won six matches in a row at the Major. Prior to that, they enjoyed an unbeaten run at PGL Astana, winning all six of their matches, and secured a runner‑up finish at IEM Rio with five wins in seven outings.

Team performance aside, Spirit holds a clear advantage in the form of the generational talent: donk. The 2024 Shanghai Major winner remains in top form and continues to edge closer to the "GOAT" moniker. Throughout the tournament, his individual performance has been nothing short of extraordinary, averaging a 1.83 rating at the Major.

While Spirit has many things going for them, G2 cannot be written off. Let's not forget — they are a former top team aiming to reclaim their glory, and their current run has been nothing short of remarkable. Since the addition of NertZ, the roster has looked more balanced, and high‑impact maps from SunPayus and HeavyGod have helped them keep pace with donk's firepower.

Ultimately, the outcome will depend on several gameday factors, but Team Spirit is expected to defeat G2 Esports in this quarterfinal matchup. Don't be surprised if donk puts on a show. And since we expect G2 to fight back strongly, we predict a 2‑1 victory for Team Spirit.
