9z Historic Run Secures IEM Cologne Major 2026 Playoffs

9z are heading to the playoffs of the IEM Cologne Major 2026. The Argentine squad closed out Stage 3 with a 3-2 record on June 15, sending The MongolZ home in the process. It is a result that stings for the Mongolian roster and sparks something real for South American Counter-Strike.

The Team That Just Would Not Quit

A 3-2 run through Stage 3 at a CS2 Major is brutal. It means surviving every do-or-die situation, finding wins when the margin for error is zero, and staying locked in while other teams around you are crumbling. 9z, with dgt, HUASOPEEK, luchov, max, and meyern on the server, did exactly that, and they saved their best for last.

The MongolZ were the final obstacle, and they were not a soft one. The Mongolian squad made history at the Esports World Cup 2025, sweeping the grand final 3-0 and announcing themselves as genuine contenders on the world stage. Today, though, the fairytale belonged to someone else. 9z came with a game plan, executed it, and closed the door.

One for the Major History Books

Before even reaching that decisive series, 9z had already made the CS2 community stop and pay attention. The Argentine side stunned Team Vitality with a 2-1 victory earlier in Stage 3, taking down one of the most decorated rosters in the world. That win alone would have been a story. But 9z were not stopping there.

They also pushed Team Spirit to the absolute limit, coming really close to defeating yet another heavyweight. The fact that they eventually fell short in that one makes the overall 3-2 run even more impressive.

This is arguably the deepest run a South American team outside of Brazil has ever made at a CS Major. The region has long lived in the shadow of Brazilian giants like Luminosity/SK Gaming and now FURIA when it comes to international representation, with the rest of South America never quite breaking through at this level. 9z has just changed that.

Americas Just Got an Extra Stage 3 Slot at Singapore

The implications of this result stretch well past Cologne. By advancing, 9z secured an additional Stage 3 spot for the Americas region at the upcoming Singapore Major, a slot that was previously allocated to Asia. That is not only just a roster making the playoffs, but also a region fighting for its seat at the table and winning it on the server.

South American CS2 has spent years pushing for greater international representation. This is what that fight looks like when it pays off.

Cologne's Biggest Stage Is Waiting

The playoffs begin June 18 at LANXESS Arena, where 9z will face the top eight teams in the world in a single-elimination format. Every map from here on out is a potential goodbye. But this squad has already proven they thrive with their backs against the wall, and in Cologne, that mentality might take them further than anyone expected.

The Argentine roster earned this moment the hard way. Now comes the fun part.
