What is Kalshi?

Kalshi is a federally regulated prediction market platform where users trade binary contracts on outcomes of real-world events across sports, politics, culture, video games, esports, and economics.

This platform is the first prediction market site to be regulated by the CFTC, and it currently operates as a Designated Contract Market (DCM). This platform works on a simple concept, whereby each market is based on Yes/No contracts on the outcome of a real-world event. For example:

“Will the Fed maintain rate in June 2026?”

Yes or No?

If you believe that the Fed will maintain the rate in their next meeting, you purchase a Yes contract. If you don’t, you purchase a No contract. The price of a contract ranges from $0.01 to $0.99, which corresponds to the market’s implied probability that such an outcome will occur.

Let’s say you purchase a Yes contract for the above market at $0.65. That means the market (group of traders) believes there’s a 65% chance that the Fed will maintain rates in its next June meeting. So, if you decide to purchase $500 worth of Yes contracts at $0.65, you’ll have about 770 shares.

Now, when that outcome happens just as predicted, the contract settles at $1. That means, your Yes contract will now be worth $770 (770 x $1). Thus, you’ll have a potential return of $270 ($770 - $500). However, if your prediction is wrong, the contract settles at $0. Hence, you get nothing and lose your $500.

One interesting aspect about Kalshi is that you’re trading against other users on the platform, which makes it more engaging than simply predicting and calling it a day. Also, as more participants enter the trade, the contract prices change.

And since sentiments can change in a moment, you can trade contracts even before an event finally settles. As such, you can either secure a profit (when the contract price is higher than your purchase price) or cut a loss (when the contract price is significantly lower than your purchase price).

Available markets on Kalshi

Kalshi lets users trade contracts on different outcomes of real-world events, ranging from sports and video games to politics and economics. Let’s have an overview of some of these key Kalshi markets.

Sports

When I explored the Kalshi sports markets, I was impressed with how deep they are. Kalshi offers a diverse lineup of sports, including football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), esports, boxing, motorsport, cricket, rugby, darts, and chess. New contract types are also added regularly, so there’s always something new to trade.

And this depth is one of a kind. For example, the National Football League (NFL) markets are more than just predicting game winners. During my review, I discovered contracts for player props, futures, win totals, and awards. In the National Basketball Association (NBA), you’ll find contracts for game outcomes, spreads, team performance, player milestones & awards, and league events.

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 set to be played in North America, there’s increased trading activity in international soccer markets. Right now, you’ll find a new batch of contracts: group-stage winners, stage-of-elimination, match winners, golden-boot awards, and tournament winner markets.

The Kalshi esports markets are located within the sports category. Once you’re in this section, you’ll be impressed by the depth of offerings. You’ll find hundreds of esports contracts across League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), Valorant, Dota 2, Rainbow Six Siege, Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Rocket League.

League of Legends is the most active market category, with more than 100 contracts being traded during major competition windows. Interestingly, the markets are not just limited to outright match winners. Kalshi offers additional ways to trade different contracts on a single match. They include Map 1 Winner, Map 2 Winner, Map 3 Winner, and Total Maps.

The next two most active categories are CS2 and Valorant, with dozens of active contracts being traded during major tournaments. If you’re into eSports, your knowledge can come in handy here.

Culture

Culture markets feature contracts on award show results, entertainment milestones, and viral social moments. Instead of focusing on traditional sports or financial events, these markets let you trade on things happening across music, movies, and television.

Interestingly, I found Kalshi video games markets under this category, and they are quite different from what I expected. My initial thoughts would be to find contracts similar to eSports contracts, where I’d trade on different video game outcomes.

However, you’re basically trading contracts of industry events such as game releases, review scores, game sales, and game-of-the-year awards.

One of the most active and most traded, at the time of writing, is the Grand Theft Auto VI release. The market asks: “When is the GTA 6 release date?” Here, you can predict Yes or No outcomes for different dates:

  • November 2026: 11% (Yes contract currently trades at 11¢)
  • December 2026: 86% (Yes contract currently trades at 86¢)
  • Before 2027: 83% (Yes contract currently trades at 83¢)

Politics

One of the most active non-sports categories is politics, which includes US election results, legislative results, executive decisions, and policy events.

What stood out to me is how frequently these markets update. New contracts appear whenever there’s a major headline, court ruling, or campaign development, so the category rarely feels stale. If you already follow political news closely, this is one area you’d spend your sessions on.

Economics

Economics markets are not far behind; you’ll find markets for the Fed’s rate decision, Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) readings, and Treasury yield targets. Compared to the Culture or Politics sections, this category feels more technical and data-driven. As such, it will appeal to you if you have a financial background and know how to read data.

Cryptocurrencies

This is one of the more volatile sections on the platform, which is not surprising considering how quickly crypto prices can move. It majorly focuses on whether a cryptocurrency [Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Dogecoin (DOGE), Hype (HYPE), Ripple (XRP), and Binance Coin (BNB)] will hit a specific price target by a certain date.

Is Kalshi legit?

Yes, it is. Kalshi is a CFTC-designated contract market, which is subject to federal oversight, real enforcement against market manipulation and insider trading, and a clear regulatory framework.

However, the regulatory landscape is now more complex than ever before. So far, Kalshi is going through a wave of high-profile legal battles across multiple states and tribal jurisdictions. The debate is whether Kalshi’s federally regulated event contracts conflict with state and tribal sports trading laws.

For now, this prediction market site is legal in all 50 US states. I’ll do my best to update this page for any future regulatory changes.

Kalshi’s look and feel

My first interaction with Kalshi blew me away. The homepage has clear market categories, and it only takes a few clicks to reach your preferred contract. The search function is very functional. Simply enter a sports team name, event, game title, or trending topic, and relevant contracts will appear instantly.

When you open a Kalshi market page, you’ll find a question, price history charts, and current market prices for Yes and No contracts. As such, you can quickly know if you’re getting in on a market that has made a large move or catching it at a stable price. The trading interface is intuitive, which is great for new users and active traders.

The Kalshi app

It has a mobile app for both iOS and Android. As such, browsing contracts, executing trades, and viewing your portfolio are easily accessible. I also find receiving push notifications a useful addition, especially when events go live, and contract prices change rapidly.

One limitation I found in my review is the research. Having a larger screen is helpful to thoroughly analyze a contract’s price history before trading. So, while the app is functional and can help you take trades, you could use your PC (if available) to evaluate a market and make your analysis. And if you’re ready to make a prediction, you can use the app.

Kalshi trading fees

Kalshi’s fee is incorporated into your contract’s anticipated returns, and the contract price will determine the amount you pay per contract. The maximum fee is $0.02 per contract, and for orders of 100 contracts or more, there is a further reduction in collective fees.

When it comes to deposits, ACH bank transfers and wire transfers are both free. The debit card deposit fee is $2 per $100 deposit (2%). It also accepts crypto deposits, which incur the usual network fees.

On the withdrawals side, ACH and wire transfer are free (although your bank may charge its own wire fee), debit card withdrawals carry a $2 fee, and crypto withdrawals carry standard blockchain network fees.

Kalshi customer support

You can reach out to Kalshi for help via the support messenger while logged in to your account. All you need to do is send a detailed description of the issue, a screenshot (or a screen recording, if possible), and your Kalshi account email.

You should note that an AI agent will answer your queries first before a human agent comes in. It also has a Help Center that pre-answers many of the questions new and pro users will encounter.

If you’re unable to reach out via in-app/web support chat, feel free to contact the operator via email at support@kalshi.com. If you want to use this support route, ensure you use the same email address on your Kalshi account. As advised by the operator, you don’t need to send an email if you can reach out via chat or have an open chat conversation in progress.
