What a treat we’re in for. Team Vitality and Team Falcons are on a collision course in the IEM Cologne Major Quarterfinals, for their first-ever clash since the latter signed Finn “karrigan” Andersen. What happens when champion meets superteam? Will history repeat itself? Or will pedigree prevail?

Vitality are looking for the three-peat to secure their Counter-Strike legacy. Meanwhile, Falcons are surging through the Major off the high of a recent roster move and soaring confidence. It’s a colossal clash of titans in the LANXESS arena and when the dust settles, only one team will get to continue their Cologne campaign. Let's have a look at what to expect.

Team Vitality have arrived in Cologne. Arrived not in the greatest condition, but they’ve made it to Playoffs regardless. All eyes turn to their side of the bracket as Vitality, Spirit, and Falcons jostle for position in the Semifinals.

Vitality have shown signs of flagging, perhaps the leftover effects from their self-imposed break right before the Major that have left them more reliant on individual star power than before — not that they’ve ever had a shortage of individual talent either.

But the crisp, smooth machine we’ve come to see and expect from Vitality is sorely missing some WD-40 as they eked out wins against FUT and 9z in full map series. Their final series against MOUZ and BetBoom showed promise that slowly but surely, they were shaking off the ring rust just in time for another Playoffs run.

But time is up. There will be no more slow ramping up, no more feet wetting. For they face the superteam in their first bout of the Playoffs.

Falcons Land at the Starting Line

For most teams, making top 8 at a CS2 major would be the pinnacle of their burgeoning careers. The names on Team Falcons have no such luxury. The self-proclaimed superteam entered Cologne surrounded by more questions than answers following their CAC Grand Finals debacle. For this team, Playoffs is the expected minimum.

No strangers to the brightest spotlights yet still time after time they shrink on the biggest stages. Well, there’s no bigger stage than the CS2 Major Playoffs but so far, Falcons are treading above the waterline. They’ve managed to take down Natus Vincere and G2 Esports in close games on their way to qualifying for Playoffs. But a clear 2-0 loss to BetBoom may continue to weigh on their minds as they head into a defining first Playoffs match.

Make no mistake, Falcons was built to lift silverware and so far, the cabinet’s gathering dust. Moreover, to win Cologne, they’ll have to start with the reigning champs, Vitality. Can they overcome the greatest team to ever do it, and in doing so, surmount their own demons?

If There Was a Team to Cause an Uproar…

Can Vitality be defeated? Survey from this Major says: yes, they bleed. And we know how that adage goes, ‘if they bleed…’ Not only does Vitality not look completely themselves, but they’re also facing possibly their worst matchup.

Looking at the head-to-head record, you’d think the other big tournament contender, Team Spirit, would be matching Vitality blow for blow. In reality, Spirit have not taken a series off Vitality since 2024 and are currently on a 6-game losing streak against the world #1.

Falcons, meanwhile, can boast to be one of the rarefied few who can best Vitality in a straight duel, having won the last 3 bouts (Blast Rivals Fall 2025, Blast Bounty Winter 2026, IEM Rio 2026).

There is a possibility of either team walking away the victor tomorrow. Both teams are headed into Playoffs having taken down a strong team. For Vitality, their 2-0 series against BetBoom is a confidence booster against a rising contender. For Falcons, finding victory after an immense comeback against one of the world’s elite is an intoxicating high that won't fade quickly.

Our advice, walk into the game with no expectations other than it being a good show between two of the most exciting teams in CS2 currently.

IEM Cologne 2026 Quarterfinals: Team Vitality vs Team Falcons Predictions

Map Veto

Falcons has kept their permaban of Overpass alive throughout their Cologne run thus far. For Vitality, that may sting a little as their highest win rate map, but not too much as Falcons will feel the reply ban on Ancient, their second highest win rate map as it stands.

We expect a classic showdown on Dust 2 and Mirage as both teams heavily favor these maps, alongside Nuke, a map both teams have shown proficiency for and preference towards.

Predictions

As implied earlier, Vitality are favored to win the matchup, as the more experienced team, the defending Major champions, the team to beat… take your pick. However, there’s a non-zero chance Falcons can dethrone them right there in the Quarterfinals. 66% of Strafe Voters are expecting a Vitality win, reflecting the same unsure sentiment.
