How Worlds Crowns a Champion
In modern day League of Legends, Worlds is held across three distinct stages: Play-Ins, Swiss Stage, and Knockout. In the latest format, Play-Ins consisted of only 2 teams, the 4th seed representatives from both the LPL and the LCK. A single Bo5 was held to determine which team would advance to the Swiss Stage.
In years prior, the Play-Ins stage would consist the 3rd seeds from smaller (but still major) regions such as the LCS and LEC along with representatives from minor regions. All matches were Bo3 and half the Play-In pool would advance to Swiss.
Swiss has typically been held as a mix of Bo1s and Bo3s. All non-elimination and qualification matches would be Bo1s and determined based on draw shows. The Knockout Stage was held as a single-elimination event, with all matches in Bo5 format.
