Happy New Year Summoners, We're diving into 2024 with some incredible news to kick things off. Riot Games has announced a huge change to League of Legends' Ranked MMR system for the upcoming 2024 season. This involves introducing a revamped algorithm to calculate LP gains. This new algorithm considers a player's performance in matches, potentially meaning that individual achievements or gameplay effectiveness will influence the number of League Points (LP) a player earns after a game. Additionally, Riot Games is moving towards implementing TrueSkill 2, a skill rating system developed by Microsoft.

MMR Change Overview

Thanks to reliable information on socials, Riot Iskar has announced that they are developing around fixing long-term negative LP states. As well as current issues that matchmaking faces. These changes include adding skill ratings by Riot's own systems, and eventually switching over to TrueSkill 2.

Skill ratings are like estimates of how likely a player is to win the next game. They're based on past game results, like who played, how long the game lasted, and the final scores. Think of it as a system that guesses how good someone is at a game based on how they've played before.

How TrueSkill works in summary is in each match, the game assumes each player has a performance level based on their skill rating. This performance is somewhat random, reflecting the unpredictability of the game.

On top of that, TrueSkill 2 attempts to refine the skill rating system by accounting for player behavior like quitting, aiming to better reflect a player's actual skill level and behavior in matches.

The implementation of TrueSkill 2 in League of Legends news is a significant step forward in how individual performance influences LP gains. Rather than relying solely on passive factors, such as wins or losses. This system delves into in-game metrics like KDA and participation in key events—similar to Valorant's approach.

Benefits to TrueSkill 2

For a long time, accurately measuring individual contributions in LoL has been a challenge. For instance, a support player might frequently sacrifice themselves to set up advantageous plays for the team, yet not receive due credit with assists. But with the integration of modern metrics, there's hope for a more precise evaluation of personal performance.

The potential benefits are substantial. A strong individual showing in a match that ends in a loss might not result in as much LP reduction. One of the biggest struggles we have all faced in our ranked games is performing our very best but still tanking a major LP cut regardless. Furthermore, this system discourages disruptive behavior like trolling or going AFK by penalizing such actions with heavier LP losses, incentivizing players to put in more effort individually.

However, there are concerns that Riot has grappled with before implementing such a system. If players understand which metrics significantly impact LP gains, they might tailor their gameplay solely to exploit these criteria. This could lead to risk-averse playstyles, artificial inflation of stats like vision scores by overspending on wards, or even disruptive actions like stealing teammates' CS to boost personal farm counts.

The hope is that Riot's implementation of Trueskill 2 will address these potential issues, preventing abuse of the system. However everything is still subject to change and nothing is finalized.
