meL Steps Away From Competitive VALORANT for 2026, Cites Mental Health Reasons

Shopify Rebellion Gold's in-game leader Melanie "meL" Capone has announced she is stepping back from professional VALORANT for the rest of 2026, effective immediately. In a heartfelt statement shared publicly, the veteran IGL cited health reasons, more specifically, a recent diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), as the driving force behind her decision.

meL revealed she has been struggling with her mental health since the summer of 2025, eventually seeking therapy in August after recognizing that her usual coping mechanisms were no longer effective. Despite maintaining what she described as a healthy lifestyle—eating well, exercising, and socializing—her mental health continued to decline regardless of her physical efforts. The diagnosis of MDD, along with other concerns, confirmed what had been a long and difficult personal journey.

Note: Mental health is a serious issue that can affect anyone, regardless of their circumstances. If you or someone you know is struggling, please don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional, a trusted loved one, or a crisis helpline in your region, because seeking help is always the right call.

The Weight Behind the Decision

In her statement, the two-time Game Changers champion was candid about battling suicidal ideation, lack of motivation, and struggling with even the most basic self-care routines. She acknowledged that it had taken a significant amount of energy to mask her condition and continue performing on the competitive stage.

"The truth is that depression can happen to anybody, at any time, regardless of life's circumstances."

meL was clear that this is not the end of her career. She intends to return to competition in 2027, whether with Shopify Rebellion, another Game Changers team, or potentially a co-ed roster. During her time away, she plans to co-stream more frequently, attend live events, and appear at the VCT desk, keeping herself active within the VALORANT ecosystem.

Gratitude Toward Team and Organization

meL extended her thanks to her teammates at Shopify Rebellion for their patience and support throughout this period and to the organization itself for being "incredibly supportive" throughout the process. Having been a cornerstone of Shopify Rebellion's back-to-back Game Changers Championship-winning roster, meL's absence will undoubtedly leave a significant void, but her well-being rightfully takes priority.
