Few events in the Counter-Strike calendar carry the same prestige and legacy as IEM Cologne. Often called the “Cathedral of Counter-Strike,” this legendary tournament returns from July 23 to August 8, 2025, bringing together 24 of the world’s best CS2 teams in a battle for glory, legacy, and the coveted trophy. As the final summer spectacle before the road to the next Major begins, all eyes are on Cologne to deliver fireworks once more.

New Era, New Format: IEM Cologne Gets a VRS Shake-Up

Unlike previous editions, IEM Cologne 2025’s invites were determined entirely by the VRS rankings as of June 2nd, moving away from the older ESL circuit-based system. This mirrors the structure used at IEM Melbourne 2024, signaling ESL’s continued commitment to the global ranking system.

Eight top-ranked teams have secured direct entry to the Group Stage

These squads will bypass the chaos of the Play-In, arriving fresh and focused as they await their challengers.

Play-In Stage:

The Play-In Stage, running from July 23-25, features a double-elimination bracket where all matches are best-of-three. Only the top eight teams will advance to the Group Stage, meaning early form will be critical.

Group Stage and Playoffs: The Road to LANXESS

From July 26-30, the remaining 16 teams (8 Play-In qualifiers + 8 direct invites) will be split into two GSL-style double-elimination groups, each consisting of eight teams. All matches remain Bo3.

The top three teams from each group will proceed to the Playoffs:

  • Group winners to the Semifinals
  • Second-place teams to Quarterfinals (High Seeds)
  • Third-place teams to Quarterfinals (Low Seeds)

The Playoffs, held at the iconic LANXESS Arena from August 1st to 3rd, will feature a single-elimination bracket.

The Grand Final, fittingly, will be a Bo5, offering a true test of endurance and tactical depth.

Where to Watch the Action

Like all ESL and IEM events, IEM Cologne will be broadcast on the official ESL CS and ESL CS B Twitch channels. Additional streams will also be available on YouTube and FaceIt. And alongside those, there will also be numerous co-streams hosted by community creators and streamers. Whether you’re a casual fan or a diehard, there will be no shortage of coverage and commentary throughout the event.

With elite teams and the electric atmosphere of the LANXESS Arena awaiting the best of the best, IEM Cologne 2025 is poised to be one of the most competitive and exciting events of the year. As titans clash and legends rise, the Cathedral of Counter-Strike is ready once more to host history in the making.
