Heroes of Newerth (HoN) was a MOBA game released in 2010 by S2 Games, inspired by Dota 1. It featured fast-paced gameplay, unique heroes, and a hardcore competitive scene. Despite early success, HoN lost popularity to Dota 2 and League of Legends, leading to its shutdown in 2022.

HoN Reborn is an attempt to revive the game by Kongor Studios, aiming to bring back classic HoN with updated features and a new platform. However, skepticism remains about its success due to market competition and platform concerns (not launching on Steam), making its impact on modern MOBAs uncertain.

HoN introduced several revolutionary features that influenced both the MOBA genre as a whole and Dota 2 itself. While it never reached the same level of popularity as its competitors, it introduced some revolutionary features in the MOBA space. Let's take a look at its legacy:


1. Reconnect System (First in MOBAs)

  • HoN was the first MOBA to introduce a reconnect feature, allowing players to return to a game after disconnecting.
  • This was a game-changer at the time, as Dota 1 (Warcraft III) did not have this, and Dota 2 only implemented it later. And to this day, it's still one of the smoothest and fastest implementations of the concept.

2. Built-in Voice Chat

  • Unlike Dota 1 and early Dota 2, HoN had integrated voice chat, allowing teams to communicate more efficiently without needing third-party software like Ventrilo or TeamSpeak.

3. Advanced Matchmaking & MMR System

  • Heroes of Newerth had a built-in matchmaking and rating system (MMR) before Dota 2, making it easier for players to find balanced games.
  • Ranked matchmaking was introduced earlier than in Dota 2, setting a standard for competitive play.

4. Better UI and Spectator Mode

  • HoN’s modern interface was significantly cleaner and more user-friendly than Dota 1’s Warcraft III engine.
  • It had an advanced spectator mode with better statistics, camera control, and casting tools.

5. Customizable Hotkeys & Smart Casting

  • Unlike Dota 1, which was tied to Warcraft III’s controls, Heroes of Newerth allowed fully customizable hotkeys and smart casting, which later became a standard feature in MOBAs.

6. Innovative Hero Designs & Mechanics

  • HoN introduced unique hero mechanics, like Vector Targeting (click and drag), which Dota 2 introduced a few years later.

Legacy & Influence

While Heroes of Newerth never surpassed Dota 2 in popularity, its features pushed the MOBA genre forward, influencing Dota 2's development in terms of UI, matchmaking, voice chat, and reconnect functionality. Many of its competitive players and designers, including IceFrog, later contributed to Dota 2’s success.

While many Dota 2 pros started in HoN, and there's definite excitement about HoN's return, many community members remain skeptical, since the game will largely be spearheaded by the same team that also ran and then shut down the initial version of HoN. Therefore it is unlikely that HoN will take back Dota 2's crown anytime soon.
