The Dota 2 community waited for months for a new event and now everyone can finally dedicate their time to Dark Carnival. The event continues the story that started two years ago with Ringmaster's official teaser.

Let's take a look at the most important aspects of the event, including the progression of the story, the comic released alongside Dark Carnival, the event's mechanics, and the scheduled progression of its next stages.

Dota 2 has released the Dark Carnival to shake things up before The International 2026.

How It Started

A few days ago, players noticed that Axe disappeared from the Dota 2 hero pool and was shortly replaced by an automaton. This sudden change immediately reminded everyone of Cogliostro's teaser released years ago.

Axe was abducted a long time ago and most fans did not forget this when the time was right.

Axe was abducted by a contraption suspiciously similar to The Ringmaster and now we finally get to know the full story behind that teaser while playing through it in Dota 2 for the foreseeable future.

Dark Carnival: How It All Begun

This story begins with the creation of Milltown. As its name suggests, Milltown quickly developed into Stonehall's main source of rye and carved its place among the Woodlands.

This attracted the attention of Hoodwink, who was acting as one of the Rebels' hired warriors, and eventually united her with Stonehall's Legion Commander in a battle that did not end well for the rebels.

Hoodwink and the Legion Commander were captured by the Ringmaster along with Axe and some other heroes.

After leading Hoodwink through the Woodlands to her cell and questioning her motives, the duo crossed paths with a Kobold and, fearless as she is, the Commander decided to follow it.

That leaves both of them at the beginning of the event and the screen you see as soon as you open the Dota 2 client to check out the new content.

Ringmaster's Show: The Prison Car

Our journey begins at the Prison Car, where players are introduced to the basic mechanics of the event. It's very similar to Crownfall in the sense that there is a map where you progress by winning with a limited pool of heroes that reward a fixed amount of tokens used to unlock new paths.

There's a lot to do now, great for anyone wanting a reason to play some Dota.

Following the Carnival theme, the tokens take the form of tarot cards and unlock rewards in each room while also allowing you to progress further into the Prison Car and beyond.

The Carnival rewards include random emoticons, loading screens, sprays, chat wheel sounds, store coins, treasures, hero sets, and candies for the Candy Caravan, which returns by popular demand.

Event Duration: At Least a Month

When we check the caravan, it's easy to notice that this event will last at least a month. We have two weeks to explore the Prison Car and the Smelting Car; in another two weeks, the Blimp and the Storage Car will unlock, and two weeks after that we will gain access to the Cauldron Car and the Engine Car.

Dark Carnival: The Long Wait Is Over

If we take into consideration that Crownfall lasted 294 days, there may still be a lot more coming, but if you're interested in the rewards it's best to play as much as you can during this first month.

Dark Carnival Store

Another returning mechanic is the Dark Carnival Store, where you can buy the Secret Rooms Pack to gain access to hidden parts of the lore, extra Treasure of Wonders attempts to try and score that ultra rare you've always wanted, or the Dark Carnival Prize Pack, which can be obtained at a steep 100% discount even as a free player by using 10 Discount Coins.

The Dark Carnival Prize Pack is focused on Candyworks and, if you're lucky, you can even roll an Arcana, so make those attempts count and go look for your favorite goodies.

If you have money, the Ringmaster has the goods.

If you're more inclined toward exclusive cosmetics, the stars of the event are the five new automaton personas for Axe, Legion Commander, Oracle, Morphling, and Bristleback.

They cost US$14.99 each and pricing is adjusted by region according to your country. If you want the full package with all personas and the Secret Rooms Pack, you'll need to spend US$89.94.

Closing Thoughts

Dark Carnival has been in the oven for a couple of years but Valve finally released it, bringing an end to the long wait for Dota 2 fans around the world who were hoping for a "new Crownfall" that will most likely stay in place at least until The International 2026.

Apparently, Axe was not the only hero abducted by Ringmaster and, as long as you have some time to play, you'll get to understand and uncover everything this new lore adds to the Dota 2 universe.

The event is barely out, so that's all we can share for now, but if any other major updates arrive we’ll make sure you get an article explaining everything you need to know, so keep an eye on the news section of the Strafe website!
