Gen.G Dominate Hanwha Life Esports in LCK 2026 Season Playoffs Grand Finals
Gen.G extend their Season Playoffs streak to two by heading into the League of Legends Worlds as the LCK’s 1st seed for the second consecutive year. Their finals series saw them defeat Hanwha Life Esports (HLE) in a decisive 3-1 fashion to lift the Season Playoffs trophy.
Gen.G Return to Form… Just In Time
This has been, in many ways, a frustrating year for Gen.G.
After winning the LCK Cup at the start of the year, Gen.G fell to G2 in the semifinals of First Stand. This was followed by a disappointing elimination at the hands of T1 in the Road to MSI Lower Bracket, thereby preventing Gen.G from attending MSI for the first time since 2022.
At the Esports World Cup, Gen.G made it to the semifinals before falling to eventual winners Dplus KIA, and then T1 in the 3rd place decider match. In the KeSPA Cup, Gen.G fell to eventual winners DNS in the final qualification round.
Despite coming short so many times this year, Gen.G has still managed to retain a level that kept them near the top of the LCK throughout. This came into play in the Season Playoffs, where a single series win against KT Rolster was sufficient to qualify the team for their 7th consecutive Worlds bout.
A large part of their struggles has been the inconsistent form from a number of their members that were typical pillars of consistency, in particular Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu and Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk.
But come Playoffs, Canyon appears to have re-found his footing, especially in the critical series against KT for the team to qualify for Worlds. And in the Finals today against HLE, Ruler was the determining factor in striking down the recent MSI champions.
A Decisive Series to End the Season
Gen.G and HLE have been the clear best teams in the LCK in this final leg of the season. Having naturally collided multiple times both domestically and internationally, the matchup between the two star-studded lineups was always interesting, and this time proved no different.
After Game 1 went the way of HLE thanks to a powerful top side performance, Gen.G bit back in Game 2. Spearheaded by Kim “Kiin” Gi-in and Ruler, Gen.G ended the game with a 16k gold lead.
This was followed by a statement Game 3, ended with a 14k gold lead. Backs against the wall, HLE went for the Hail Mary, drafting Locke and Fiora in hopes of snowballing a lead with their powerful solo laners.
Unfortunately, it did not go to plan as the Fiora was quickly put on the backfoot after an early lane swap. Despite the best efforts of Kim “Zeka” Geon-woo on the Locke, it wasn’t enough to keep HLE competitive in teamfights and Gen.G marched to a 28 minute and 10k gold lead victory.
Gen.G Claim First Seed Heading into Worlds 2026
This is 5th time Gen.G enters Worlds as the first seed from the LCK. Widely-recognized as the region's strongest domestic performer, it comes as little surprise how often they enter Worlds as one of the predominant favourites to claim the coveted title.
And yet, Gen.G have seldom performed to expectations. Of the last 5 Worlds attended, Gen.G have made it as far as the semifinals 4 times.
However, with this return to form this Playoffs, coupled with the stakes as Kiin's potential final Worlds run, hopes run high that perhaps... this could be the year.
