Games of the Future 2026: Format, Schedule, Fixtures and More

Games of the Future 2026 is the last million-dollar tournament of the season for the professional Dota 2 circuit before The International 2026 closes one competitive cycle and begins the next. Most of the biggest teams will not attend the event, but we still have some interesting contenders, including the two strongest Chinese teams.

Let's take a look at the tournament's format, which teams were invited, when each stage will take place, and how this event might give us valuable insights into the performance of teams that will also compete at The International 2026.

Games of the Future 2026: Lineup

As usual for smaller events in the professional Dota 2 circuit, Games of the Future has no qualifiers and invites teams directly to the tournament. The lineup was announced on June 26 through the event's Facebook profile.

Tournament Organization

This event will feature some interesting ideas that we have seen throughout the year. First, the Group Stage will consist entirely of best-of-three series and will feature four groups of four teams in a modified GSL format (GSL stands for Global StarCraft II League).

The top team from each group advances directly to the Quarterfinals of the Playoffs, while the second and third-place teams advance to the Decider Round of the Playoffs. The bottom team from each group will be eliminated. The Group Stage begins on July 31 and ends on August 1, followed by the Playoffs from August 2 to August 5.

Group Stage Schedule

Since the Group Stage lasts only two days, things will get serious very quickly. The tournament will be played offline, and the time zone in Astana may be either too early or too late for Western audiences.

We will present the Group Stage schedule in GMT, so be sure to adjust it to your local time. Here is the full schedule:

Elimination matches will take place on August 1 at 05:00 GMT (Groups A and B) and 11:00 GMT (Groups C and D). Winners' matches will be played on August 1 at 08:00 GMT (Groups A and B) and 14:00 GMT (Groups C and D).

Interesting Matchups

Since we have four groups with a couple of matches already scheduled in each, let's take a look at the most interesting matchup from every group.

Group A — Vici Gaming vs. Amaru Gaming

Vici Gaming has been battling Xtreme Gaming for the title of China's best team and found partial success by finishing fourth at the Esports World Cup 2026, while XG was eliminated before reaching the Playoffs after losing to Team Liquid.

Amaru Gaming has been performing below expectations, but having Héctor "K1" Rodríguez as their carry is always reason enough for Vici to keep their eyes peeled if they don't want to suffer a surprise elimination early in the tournament.

Group B — Rune Eaters vs. Midas Club

Rune Eaters were the biggest surprise of the Esports World Cup 2026 and managed to finish in the Top 8 as the tournament's most unexpected dark horse. Now they face a relatively easier opening matchup and enter the event as favorites.

On the other side of the arena, Midas Club returns as the successor to the now-defunct Team Nemesis, which competed at the Esports World Cup and was eliminated during the Group Stage.

Considering that result, they enter as the dark horse against the EWC's own dark horse. Will Astini find a way to turn this roster into a Tier 1 contender before the beginning of a new season?

Group C — Yakult Brothers vs. Zero Tenacity

Group C is the least exciting of the four, and the best matchup has Yakult Brothers entering as favorites. They have been struggling to perform consistently and are currently the weakest of the three major Chinese teams attending this tournament.

Zero Tenacity has also been trying to break through the Tier 2 barrier but has not found much success either with roster changes or tournament results. This is one last opportunity to rise before the new season begins, and Zero Tenacity will probably go all in from day one.

Group D — Xtreme Gaming vs. LGD Gaming

This is most likely the best matchup of the Group Stage and, as expected, it was saved for the final series of the opening round. Xtreme Gaming has its TI runner-up status to defend, and this tournament is the perfect opportunity to establish itself ahead of Vici Gaming before The International 2026.

LGD Gaming, on the other hand, has experienced a rebirth after leaving Heroic behind but failed to maintain its momentum at the Esports World Cup after being prematurely eliminated by BetBoom Team during the Survival Stage. Now they have a chance to sharpen their claws before TI, but that opportunity may also take its toll on their stamina ahead of the biggest tournament of the year.

Closing Thoughts

Games of the Future is a great opportunity to earn some prize money before the new season begins, but it will also be an important test for teams that are heading to The International 2026, such as Xtreme Gaming and Vici Gaming.

Neither team has managed to establish itself as a true powerhouse, and time is quickly running out. Their remaining option is to risk stretching themselves too thin right before TI on home turf. Let's hope this gamble pays off for the Chinese contenders and that they can bring the Aegis of Champions back home this year.
