About this event

1win Essence Play-in

Overview

The 1win Essence Play-in is the qualifying stage of the 1win Essence Dota 2 tournament series. It serves as an open pathway for invited mid- and lower-tier teams to earn spots in the main event of each edition. The series is organized by BASED Esports and sponsored by the betting company 1win. The main 1win Essence events have been classified as Tier 1 (or high Tier 2 in early editions) on Liquipedia, featuring strong European, CIS, Chinese, and other regional squads competing for prize pools of $100,000–$200,000 USD. The Play-in itself is a lower-tier (C-tier equivalent) online qualifier focused on qualification slots rather than cash prizes.

The Play-in stage was introduced for the third edition in late 2026 to expand the field and provide more opportunities after the post-The International roster shuffle period.

History

The broader 1win Essence series launched in 2026 under BASED Esports with 1win as title sponsor. 1win Essence I ran from 2026-05-02 to 2026-05-11 as an online event with a $100,000 USD prize pool and approximately 12–14 teams. It used a multi-stage structure including groups and a decider before double-elimination playoffs. PARIVISION defeated 1w Team 3–0 in the grand final.

1win Essence II followed from 2026-07-30 to 2026-08-05, also online (Europe servers), with a doubled $200,000 USD prize pool and 10 invited teams. It featured two round-robin groups of five (Bo2 matches) advancing to a double-elimination playoff (Bo3, grand final Bo5). Team Liquid swept Team Falcons 3–0 in the final to claim $100,000, with 1w Team taking third. This edition served as a final tune-up before The International 2026, with nine of ten teams qualified for TI.

1win Essence III was initially planned for early September 2026 but postponed due to incomplete post-TI rosters among Tier 1 teams. It was rescheduled for November 2026 with an expanded format that added a dedicated Play-in stage (the first of its kind in the series) for 10 teams competing for 4 main-event berths. The main stage (12 teams total) runs 2026-11-12 to 2026-11-18 with another $200,000 USD prize pool. The series has remained fully online to date, emphasizing European/CIS servers and frequent high-level competition outside major LAN circuits.

Format

The current edition is the 1win Essence III Play-in (also referred to as Play-in season 3 2026), held online on Europe West servers from 2026-11-07 to 2026-11-11. It features a field of 10 invited teams divided into two single round-robin groups of five teams each. All matches are best-of-three (Bo3). The top two teams from each group (four total) advance to the main event group stage of 1win Essence III; the remaining teams are eliminated. There is no separate playoff bracket within the Play-in—qualification is determined solely by group standings. No cash prize pool is attached; the reward is direct qualification (and associated main-event prize share opportunity). The main event that follows uses round-robin groups into an eight-team double-elimination playoff (Bo3 matches, grand final Bo5).

Notable Editions

The introduction of the Play-in for Essence III marked a significant evolution, expanding access after the chaotic post-TI 2026 roster period that forced the main event’s postponement. It brought together a mix of established mid-tier sides (such as PlayTime, Yellow Submarine, and HULIGANI) and emerging or reformed lineups (including Astra Invicta with notable veterans, Xipto Esports, LEGION, CyberHero, Power Rangers, Pipsqueak+4, and K4K4NARSKIE CYXARIKI). This stage provided valuable match practice and a clear path into a Tier 1 main event featuring heavyweights like Team Liquid (defending champions), Team Spirit, PARIVISION, BetBoom Team, 1win Team, Aurora Gaming, GamerLegion, and LGD Gaming.

Essence II stands out in the parent series as the highest-profile edition to date, drawing near-TI fields and strong viewership as a final form check before The International 2026 in Shanghai. Liquid’s dominant run, including a group-stage topping performance and clean grand-final sweep of Falcons (reigning TI champions at the time of some coverage), highlighted the series’ competitive depth.

Past Champions

As a qualification stage, the Play-in does not crow a single “champion” with a trophy or top cash prize; instead, four teams qualify. Results for the 2026 III Play-in were pending or unreported in full detail at the time of the main event’s start (group standings determine 1st–2nd per group as primary qualifiers).

Parent series main-event winners:

  • 1win Essence I (2026): PARIVISION (defeated 1w Team 3–0 in the Bo5 grand final). Prize: $50,000 USD (1st), $25,000 (2nd). Notable for PARIVISION’s clean run and strong CIS/European representation.
  • 1win Essence II (2026): Team Liquid (defeated Team Falcons 3–0). Prize: $100,000 USD (1st), $50,000 (2nd), $22,500 (3rd – 1w Team). Liquid peaked strongly pre-TI; Falcons reached the final after strong group and upper-bracket play.
  • 1win Essence III (2026): Ongoing/main stage in progress at time of writing (Play-in feeders TBD in final standings).

Viewership & Impact

1win Essence II achieved solid mid-tier Tier 1 viewership metrics: peak concurrent viewers of 110,237, average of approximately 41,217, and over 3.31 million hours watched across roughly 80 hours of airtime. Broadcasts aired on platforms including Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Dota TV, and others, with English and Russian coverage. Popular co-streams (e.g., by Gorgc) set personal channel records during playoffs. The series has carved a niche as a reliable online high-prize event bridging major tournaments, especially valuable during roster transition periods. It boosts mid-tier teams’ visibility and provides ranking points/experience while sponsored production by 1win/BASED Esports maintains consistent production quality. Social channels include X/Twitter @1win_essence and streams via w.tv/1win_dota (English) and associated Twitch/YouTube channels. Overall significance lies in filling the calendar with accessible Tier 1-adjacent competition in the European/CIS-heavy Dota 2 ecosystem.
