G2 Esports eliminated from IEM Rio 2024 Group Stage
Eternal Fire sent G2 Esports packing after a disappointing show from the BLAST Premier Fall Final champions.
G2’s elimination from IEM Rio 2024 comes after losing their opening BO1 match against Heroic. In their first match. G2's decision to let the veto go to Dust 2 backfired as they had a disastrous start on the map, managing to secure only two rounds on the CT side. One of those rounds came from a 4k by Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa, and the other was due to a clutch 1v2 by Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov.
MalbsMd continued to shine in the second-half pistol round, sparking a promising comeback attempt by Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski and the rest of the team. Despite their individuals stepping up in tough situations, Heroic's early lead proved too much to overcome.
In the end, it was a crucial triple kill with a Five-Seven by Rasmus "sjuush" Beck that sealed the victory for HEROIC, knocking G2 to the lower bracket.
The Turkish slay the samurai
Eternal Fire came swinging since the start of the series on their map pick, Anubis, especially with Özgür "woxic" Eker showing incredible form. G2 displayed a lackluster performance and struggled to find their footing after finishing the first half 3-9 on T side.
From losing aim duels and bad reads to minimal map control, the first map ended 13-4 with Nikola “NiKo” Kovač sitting on the bottom of the leaderboard with mere 38 ADR and 0.23 K/D.
Considering Anubis is their worst map in the last three months, there was a glimpse of hope heading into Mirage. Yet, they had nothing to show for. The same fiasco continued with a boneless T side, lack of impact from their star players and more importantly struggled to recover during the mid-rounds.
Eternal Fire on the other hand, played the perfect Counter-Strike with pitch-perfect executions that kept G2 striving to overcome their issues.
What’s next?
While G2 are busy with packing their luggage, the Turkish squad is preparing for their next opponent in The MongolZ for a chance at reaching the Lower Bracket Final.
To conclude, the current G2 lineup has one last chance for redemption at the BLAST Premier World Final in Singapore before heading to Shanghai for the RMR. With this disastrous showing in Rio, their days are certainly numbered under Snax’s leadership.
Be sure to catch the fun in IEM Rio as the group stage is nearing its end with more top teams expected to follow G2’s path. Also check out the Strafe news page to stay up to date with the latest results and upsets.
