ESL Challenger China Season 3: a Shortcut to the Esports World Cup 2026

ESL Challenger China Season 3: a Shortcut to the Esports World Cup 2026

The Esports World Cup 2026 is a new iteration of what has become the biggest esports event in recent history. Dota 2 will have qualifiers, but this time many teams will also be selected directly from the ESL Pro Tour scoreboard.

In China, things have started working a bit differently. They created the ESL Challenger as a gateway into ESL tournaments and this also means it will award a slot for the Esports World Cup in Season 3.

The Dota segment of the EWC 2026 will take place on the first and second weeks of the event.

ESL Challenger China Season 3: A Shortcut

The ESL Challenger China comes to its third iteration and after awarding slots to DreamLeague Season 26, Season 28 and ESL One Birmingham, the champion will now get a slot in the Esports World Cup 2026.

China has made their own way to get to the Esports World Cup.

This tournament follows a simple double-elimination bracket with no Group Stage. Teams will play a single map in Round 1, best-of-three matches in the remaining rounds and a best-of-five series in the Grand Final.

Xtreme Gaming adds an unusual rule to the mix: since they are already qualified via ESL Pro Tour points, if they win the tournament, the runner-up will qualify for EWC 2026 instead.

Invited and Qualified Teams

The lineup of eight teams competing for the slot and prize money is divided into two groups: half received direct invites from ESL, while the other half qualified through the Open Qualifiers:

Xtreme Gaming and Vici Gaming need no further introduction since they are the teams representing China in ESL tournaments this year. Yakult Brothers is also trying again to land a slot with their rebuilt roster.

Paparazi will has one last shot at the biggest prize pool of the year.

The dark horse in the list of invited teams is Team Refuser, that "unretired" Zhang "Paparazi灬" Chengjun last Christmas but did not manage to qualify for any big tournament so far in 2026.

ESL Challenger China Season 3: Round 1 Schedule

Chinese schedules tend to be a bit off to Western fans but maybe it's a good option to watch before sleep and slow down from a day's work if you live in Western Europe.

This is the schedule for the first round of the tournament:

  • April 30 23:00 GMT — Xtreme Gaming vs. Roar Gaming
  • April 30 — 23:00 GMT — Yakult Brothers vs. Mideng Dreamer
  • May 1 — 00:30 GMT — Vici Gaming vs. Cloud Dawning
  • May 1 — 00:30 GMT — Team Refuser vs. Team Resilience

Closing Thoughts

We will not cover the tournament step by step since there is no Group Stage but whichever team manages to come out on top will join the small group of teams already qualified via EPT Points.

After Valve decided to take back all the "hats" from the compendium, the Riyadh Masters and by extension the Esports World Cup took the spot of biggest prize pool of the year for professional Dota players.

We will keep an eye on the development of this tournament and on other news about professional Dota 2 so remember to check our news section for updates on the Strafe website!
