Dota 2 patch 7.40 is here and we are counting down the best supports to grind MMR. With all the changes to the game, it's important to note which heroes are viable and which to avoid.

We will list down the three best supports to climb the MMR ladder, as well as provide tips and advice on how to play each hero.

Three Supports to Grind MMR in Dota 2 Patch 7.40

Omniknight

The changes to sharing tangos, as well as the overall lower gold from assist makes supporting a little harder than before. Position five heroes that provide some sustain in lane, while being fairly item independent are in demand.

Omniknight fulfills both of these requirements. He can spam Purification in lane to keep his carry alive, as well as using it offensively to chase down enemies. Repel is a very strong tool to discourage enemy aggression.

The hero received solid buffs in the latest update. He is tankier with an extra armor point, while both his defensive abilities have lower cooldown. The hero was significantly buffed in a patch that favors his playstyle.

For playing the hero, we recommend maxing purification while putting a value point in his other three spells. The proceed to max Repel followed by Hammer of Purity. Omniknight can be built as an aura bot with Greaves, Pipe, and Crimson. Or you can go for utility items such as Glimmer, Force Staff, and Solar Crest. Aghanim's Shard is worth buying but you can wait until it drops from Tormentor as well.

Omniknight is a strong defensive back line support with a solid farming tool in Purification. He has a respectable laning phase but shines in the mid-late game, where his shields provide incredible durability for his team.

Witch Doctor

If you're a fan of Omniknight's playstyle, but find it a bit too passive, then Witch Doctor is the perfect fit. Providing great healing over time, but with a lot more punch in his skill set.

Let's start with his laning stage. Witch Doctor is an offensive power house early. Maledict and Cask, along with a Blood Grenade can finish off any low health support. Maledict discourages trading with Witch Doctor. The hero's stun makes it near impossible for enemies to group up against him.

Witch Doctor offensive output increases as the game goes on. Death Ward deals incredible pure damage, and scales very well into the late game. Maledict's level 15 talent is another big power spike as well.

We've discussed the hero as a damage dealer, but Witch Doctor is no slouch as a medic. Voodoo Restoration heals 50 health in a generous AoE. The spell costs less mana now and the 1% extra heal at level 20 makes lineups near-unkillable.

To play Witch Doctor, we recommend maxing Maledict early with two points in his stun or a value point in his heal. We recommend maxing Voodoo Restoration second after that, and always leveling his ultimate when available.

The item build for the hero differs on which aspect you focus on. Spirit Vessel and Blink Dagger if you aim to jump enemies and get quick kills. While Aura items and Holy Locket are great for mass sustain for the team.

With his exceptional laning stage, versatile item build, and high damage, Witch Doctor is one of the best supports to grind MMR in Dota 2 patch 7.40.

Venomancer

Venomancer was the biggest winner so far.

Maybe healing just isn't for you. Omniknight? that guy is for people who can't get into med school. Witch Doctor? identity crisis right there if you ask me. You just want to dish out as much toxicity as you can. In an emotionally healthy way of course.

Enter Venomancer, the answer to your prayers. Veno can use his first spell to do damage. Poison Sting to do damage. Summon wards to do.... well, damage. And his ultimate is uhh... Damage too actually.

You get the picture. Venomancer is pure damage over time with not much else going for him. Still, he is one of the best supports at doing what he does.

With shared regeneration being nerfed, heroes who can harass in lane have become more valuable. Venomancer is fantastic at that. A point in Gale, with some right clicks can whittle anyone down. Especially with combined with Poison Sting and an orb effect.

Once he hits level three, Venomancer can focus on maxing Plague Wards and using them to block camps, add extra harass, cancel enemy Salves, and jungle if needed. Plague Wards provide the hero with plenty of utility.

For items, you'll want to get Urn in every game, and usually upgrade it into Vessel for more damage. Since the hero doesn't lack damage, it's best to focus on survavability. Guardian Greaves and Force Staff are great purchases in every game.

While fairly one-dimension, Venomancer is among the best supports to grind MMR in Dota 2 patch 7.40. He is a strong laner, deals significant damage at all portions of the game, capable of jungling, and works well as a tower pusher and defender. Simply put, you can't mess up with Venomancer.
