Who is Leona in League of Legends?

Leona was born on Mount Targon to the Rakkor tribe, raised in strict service to the Solari. 'Rakkor' translated as Tribe of the Last Sun. The belief was that many worlds had existed before this one and that each had been destroyed by a great catastrophe. The Solari seers taught that when their sun was destroyed, there would be no new one. Hence, the warrior of the Rakkor tribe trained to fight against those who sought to extinguish it.

Mercy, Failure of Duty, and Fate

One day, a young Leona encountered a golden-skinned boy with horns and bat-like wings. Taking pity on him despite not understanding his language, she chose to stay her hand, leading him instead on the path to the summit. 

One of her tribe saw Leona's act of mercy and branded her a heretic. By the laws of the Rakkor, she was sentenced to a trial by combat against her accuser. When the sun set, the two were still locked in combat. An elder of the Solari halted the trial and declared that they believed Leona to be the chosen one of Targon to unit the celestial realm.

Joining the Solari

Leona was inducted into the Solari where she was taught the strictures of the order, absolute and unyielding in nature. Devouring every teaching she could learn, Leona's early years in the Solari formed the most crucial foundation for her future leadership.

Meanwhile, she continued her martial training, now a member of the warrior order of the Solari as well, the Ra-Horak (Followers of the Horizon). In time, Leona rose to eventually command the Ra-Horak as perhaps the Sun's most devoted, and some would say, zealous servant.

Leona and Diana: Bound by Fate

Leona's chance encounter with Diana forever changed the former. When called to escort Diana, a young member of the Solari, the two first met one another. Hair of purest white and a shimmering rune on her forehead, Leona had long heard of the girl, a known troublemaker. Diana had gone missing some months before, but had now returned, clad in a suit of pale armor that glinted with silver light.

Now, she claimed to bring word of some great news, incredible revelations that should shake the Solari to its foundations. When Leona brought Diana before the elders, Diana spoke of the Lunari, an ancient faith that venerated the moon. She claimed that the Solari faith was incomplete at that she had reached a realm beyond the mountaintop where the sun and moon were not enemies. 

Tragedy and the Pursuit to Mount Targon's Peak

Angered at every word she heard, Leona prepared for the elders to reject Diana's words. Instead, Diana's fury at the elders manifested in a blinding light and orbs of silver fire. In a blink of an eye, the elders were turned to dust and Leona was blasted from the chamber and knocked unconscious. 

When Leona came to, she found Diana gone and the Solari leaderless. Vowing to hunt Diana down and destroy her for the murders, Leona moved to track the silver-haired girl. 

The Aspect of the Sun

Leona tracked her up the sloped of Mount Targon, not faltering once despite traversing a landscape she had never followed before. Eventually, she reached the top. Instead of Diana, however, she found the golden-skinned boy she had once guided. Above him, the sky burned with a blazing light, echoes of a majestic city of gold and silver. 

Taking his offered hand, he led her into the light where she was engulfed by searing illuminations. As a powerful presence filled her limbs and mind, her armor and weapons were replaced by ornate warplate, a shield of sunlight and a sword of chained dawnlight. 

Armed with new vast knowledge, Leona knew there was only one person she could share it with. She needed to find Diana. 

Leadership and Modern Role

Leona rose to command the Ra’Horak. Every Solari warrior answered to her authority. She became both a spiritual symbol and a military leader.

She remains loyal to Solari dominance but fears what Diana may become if left unchecked. Leona still seeks Diana but is driven by more than just base feeling for revenge now.

Her leadership is strict but driven by duty rather than cruelty.

Personality and Appearance

Leona is tall and imposing, with lightly tanned skin and long auburn hair. Her red and gold armor reflects Solari craftsmanship and celestial power. A spiked golden crown marks her as an Aspect.

Her personality centers on devotion and resolve. She is willing to sacrifice herself for her people. Her warmth appears most clearly in her feelings for Diana, whom she still loves despite their conflict.

This mix of compassion and rigid belief makes Leona both noble and tragic.

Leona’s Powers and Abilities

Aspect Host Physiology

As the host of the Aspect of the Sun, Leona possesses enhanced strength, speed, and endurance. She feels little pain, resists sickness, and ages far more slowly than mortals.

Her body channels solar power without breaking under its force.

Solar Magic

Leona commands solar energy through her connection to the Aspect. She can call down solar flares from the sky and infuse her weapons with burning light. This magic sears enemies and reinforces her defenses.

Her powers reflect the sun’s nature: relentless and revealing.

Combat Training

Leona trained with the Ra’Horak from a young age. Her discipline and technique made her a master long before her ascension. This training allows her to wield her Aspect powers with control rather than chaos.

Zenith Blade and Shield of Daybreak

The Zenith Blade and Shield of Daybreak appeared when Leona became an Aspect. Both are bound to her celestial role.

The Zenith Blade radiates heat and light capable of burning through flesh and armor. The Shield of Daybreak creates barriers of solar energy and emits intense heat and light. Together, they form the core of her combat style.

Leona on the Rift

Leona’s abilities reflect her lore. She excels at engaging enemies, controlling fights, and protecting allies. Her power peaks when she stays close to enemies, absorbing damage while locking targets in place.

Her strength lies in timing and positioning. Once she commits, retreat is difficult, both for her and her enemies.

Relationships with Other Champions

Leona’s strongest bond remains with Diana. Their shared past and opposing Aspects place them on different paths, yet their connection endures.

She also clashes with Atreus, the mortal host of the Aspect of War. His rejection of the Aspects puts him at odds with her beliefs.

Soraka recognizes Leona’s celestial presence, referring to her as a woman whose face burned like the sun.

Leona carries ancient knowledge and heavy responsibility. She stands between faith and truth, order and compassion. Her future depends on whether she can reconcile her duty to the Solari with the deeper truths hidden within Mount Targon.
