Overwatch Experiments With 6v6 Flex Queue in Quick Play Hacked
Overwatch's Quick Play: Hacked mode is back, and this time, Blizzard is testing the popular 6v6 format with a small twist. Until July 19, players can jump into the mode to experience 6v6 gameplay with a new team composition: 1‑3‑2 (1 Tank, 3 flex Damage heroes, and 2 Supports).
This experiment is part of Blizzard's broader plan to potentially return to a 6v6 model, but with changes aimed at making the game more balanced and enjoyable. The goal is to ease the burden on Tank players, a role that has often been described as overly demanding.
According to the developers in a recent Director's Take post, in the current 5v5 format, solo Tanks frequently feel overwhelmed by responsibility and are often forced to counter‑swap, disrupting team composition and dynamics.
To make matters worse, Tanks can sometimes find themselves outmatched in 1v1s against heroes from other roles, limiting their survivability and impacting the team as a whole.
The changes being tested in Quick Play: Hacked will help the developers gather relevant data. This, combined with community feedback, will influence future gameplay adjustments from Blizzard.
Blizzard Experiments 6v6 Flex Queue with 1-3-2 Team Comp
Unlike the original 6v6 mode, where each role has two heroes, the 6v6 Flex Queue Experiment mode guarantees 2 Supports and a minimum of 1 Tank — players who pick these roles will have them locked. The 3 Damage heroes, however, play a flexible role, as they can switch to Tank at will, with the Tank limit capped at 2.
So when you enter a match as one of the three Flex Damage heroes, you can pick either a DPS or a Tank. While any Damage hero can switch to Tank, only one will be allowed to do so at a time. If a fellow DPS decides to switch to Tank, you will have to wait for them to return to DPS if you want to play as Tank.

This creates plenty of counter‑play potential, adding more gameplay opportunities to an already dynamic game style. And with the mode being a hybrid of standard Role Queue and Open Queue, players will find it familiar, as none of the changes feel out of the ordinary.
Since Damage is the most popular role in the game, having three DPS heroes helps reduce matchmaking queue times. Likewise, as Tank is the least popular role, standard 6v6 matchmaking would take longer to find two Tanks.
Additionally, having the choice between two team compositions and the ability to change them mid‑game can shift how a match plays out. This could pave the way for an all‑new Overwatch experience.
While that flexibility does exist in Open Queue, Flex Queue avoids scenarios where teams end up without a single Tank or with six Supports or six Damage heroes. Although that can be fun, it adds a layer of chaos and reduces the mode's competitive integrity.

Note that the outcome of the 6v6 experiment won't necessarily change the game's main format. As seen in the past, it could simply pave the way for new Arcade modes or lead to adjustments in existing core modes.
Another 6v6 experiment is scheduled for later this month. From July 30 to August 2, Overwatch will test Dynamic Queue, which incorporates elements from Flex Queue. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
