The Dota 2 Esports World Cup 2026 (EWC 2026) tournament is finally about to begin, with 24 teams set to battle over the next couple of weeks for their share of the $2 million prize pool.

Let's take a look at everything you need to know so you don't miss your favorite teams in action at the biggest event of the ESL Pro Circuit and the final stop before The International 2026.

The Esports World Cup 2026 is about to begin and teams are ready for action.

EWC 2026: Invited and Qualified Teams

We have already covered all the details about the invited and qualified teams for the Esports World Cup 2026 in our dedicated article, so here's a quick look at the complete list of all 24 participants.

Qualified Through Regionals

Tournament Organization

The EWC 2026 will feature three stages, beginning with the Group Stage from July 7 to July 12, followed by the Survival Stage from July 14 to July 15, and concluding with the Playoffs from July 16 to July 19.

Group Stage

The Group Stage will divide the 24 teams into four groups of six, with each group playing a round-robin format. Every series will consist of two games.

Teams might get eliminated from the first stage if they underperform.

The top team from each group advances directly to the Playoffs, while the teams finishing second through fourth qualify for the Survival Stage. The bottom two teams in each group will be eliminated.

Survival Stage

The Survival Stage will feature the remaining three teams from each group, with only one team from each group advancing to the Playoffs. All matches will be played as best-of-three series.

It is not clear if teams will be cross-seeded in the Survival Stage.

It is still unclear whether teams will be seeded according to their Group Stage placement or cross-seeded for the Survival Stage. However, the winners of the opening round will face the teams that placed second in the following round for a Playoff spot.

Playoffs

The Playoffs will feature a single-elimination bracket with best-of-three matches, except for the Grand Final, which will be played as a best-of-five. The tournament champions will take home $750,000 from the total prize pool.

Interesting Matchups

There will be plenty of exciting matches throughout the Group Stage, but we'll highlight just one must-watch matchup from each group to keep things short and concise.

Group A — Team Falcons vs. BB Team

Group A gets off to an explosive start as Team Falcons face BB Team in their opening match on July 7. While Team Falcons hold the overall head-to-head advantage, BB Team have won the last three meetings between the two sides at PGL Wallachia and BLAST Slam VII.

BB Team has a better recent history but Team Falcons are the TI Champions.

Group B — Team Liquid vs. Aurora Gaming

Group B saves its biggest matchup for the final day, with Team Liquid taking on Aurora Gaming on July 11. These teams have faced each other three times previously, with Aurora Gaming leading the head-to-head thanks to two victories at BLAST Slam VII.

Will Liquid even out the score against Aurora Gaming?

Group C — PVISION vs. Team Spirit

Like Group B, Group C also saves its most anticipated matchup for July 12, when PVISION take on Team Spirit. Team Spirit have won two of their last three meetings, claiming victories at BLAST Slam VII and DreamLeague Season 27. In 2026 alone, however, the teams have split their encounters with one win apiece.

Group C has an Eastern European Classic on the last day of Groups.

Group D — 1w vs. Team Yandex

1w and Team Yandex will also clash on July 12, in what could very well decide first place in Group D and direct qualification to the Playoffs. Historically, Team Yandex have had the upper hand in this matchup, although those results do not account for 1w now fielding the former Tundra Esports roster.

1w's history does not reflect their potential considering they bought a brand new roster.

Closing Thoughts

The Esports World Cup 2026 is both the first and final premier event before The International, giving fans a strong indication of what to expect from the world's best Dota 2 teams heading into what appears to be the TI patch.

It is also the perfect opportunity to see new strategies emerge and watch teams adapt to the evolving meta, so be sure to follow our tournament coverage in the news section of the Strafe website!
