Call of Duty passes $40 billion in lifetime revenue after 24 years

Call of Duty has passed $40 billion in lifetime franchise revenue. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the figure on October 26, 2026, three days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23.

The number covers the entire series since its 2003 debut. It does not show Modern Warfare 4 sales, a launch revenue figure or a player count for the new game. Microsoft also did not say when Call of Duty crossed $40 billion.

The total is cumulative revenue, not profit. Development, marketing, platform fees, retail cuts, esports costs and other expenses remain outside the calculation. Microsoft has not published a breakdown by game, year, platform, region or revenue source.

How the total grew

The published record gives three firm checkpoints. Activision reported about $27 billion in lifetime consumer spending after 2020. The company raised the total to more than $30 billion in June 2022, when Call of Duty had also sold more than 425 million paid copies.

Call of Duty added about $10 billion after that 2022 disclosure. The increase equals roughly one third across four years and four months. It covers Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare 4, Warzone, mobile spending and catalog sales.

The franchise also passed 500 million paid copies before Black Ops 6 launched in October 2024. Activision said Black Ops 6 was excluded from that unit count. Microsoft has not published an updated total since then.

The revenue mix changed

Paid console and PC releases built the original business. Activision then added paid map packs, followed by battle passes, operator skins, weapon blueprints and other digital items. The current store operates across premium games, Warzone and mobile.

The clearest franchise-wide annual figure came in 2020. Activision said Call of Duty generated more than $3 billion in net bookings during the preceding 12 months. That total included paid games, downloadable content, mobile sales, license fees, merchandise and publisher incentives.

Net bookings differ from accounting revenue. Activision defined the metric as the net amount of products and services sold digitally or shipped physically during a period. It can include license fees, merchandise and publisher incentives, while accounting revenue accounts for deferrals.

Warzone changed the scale of the business after its March 2020 release. The free-to-play battle royale passed 100 million players by April 2021. Activision did not disclose Warzone revenue separately, but it linked the game to stronger in-game spending and higher premium sales.

Call of Duty: Mobile supplied another measurable layer. Activision said the game earned more than $1 billion in consumer spending during 2021. Lifetime player spending passed $3 billion by June 2023, while downloads reached one billion in November 2024.

Modern Warfare 4 has no public total

Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, 2026. Sharma paired its release with the $40 billion franchise total and described the game as one of the most celebrated entries in the series' 24-year history.

Her post did not provide opening-weekend sales, player numbers or revenue for the new title. The announcement therefore confirms the lifetime total, but it does not prove that Modern Warfare 4 pushed Call of Duty past $40 billion.

That distinction matters because Microsoft changed the commercial model after buying Activision Blizzard. Black Ops 6 became the first Call of Duty game available on Game Pass on day one in 2024. A subscription download raises player counts, but Microsoft recognizes subscription revenue over time.

Microsoft said Black Ops 6 set records for day-one players, total hours, matches played and Game Pass subscriber additions on launch day. PlayStation and Steam unit sales were more than 60 percent above Modern Warfare III during the comparable launch period. The company gave no unit or dollar total.

Annual revenue remains private

Call of Duty has no published annual revenue figure for any year between 2018 and 2025. Activision reported results for its publishing division through 2022, but that segment also contained Destiny, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sekiro and other games.

Activision segment revenue reached $2.458 billion in 2018, fell to $2.219 billion in 2019 and rose to $3.942 billion in 2020. The 2020 rise followed the combined availability of Modern Warfare, Warzone, Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Mobile.

The division then earned $3.478 billion in 2021 and $3.275 billion in 2022. Those totals show the Activision business, not Call of Duty alone. The company stopped publishing standalone results after Microsoft completed its $68.7 billion purchase on October 13, 2023.

Microsoft now reports Call of Duty inside Xbox Gaming. Gaming revenue reached $21.503 billion in fiscal 2024 and $23.455 billion in fiscal 2025. Those figures include Xbox hardware, Game Pass, Bethesda and other content. They cannot be used as Call of Duty annual revenue.

What remains unknown

The $40 billion announcement verifies Call of Duty's cumulative commercial size. It does not verify an annual revenue series or a dollar split among full games, in-game purchases, Game Pass, mobile, licensing and merchandise.

Licensing and merchandise remain especially opaque. Activision's net bookings definition includes license fees, merchandise and publisher incentives, but it has not disclosed their size. The Call of Duty League sells team packs and championship bundles, yet no public figure separates esports-related sales from the wider total.

The most useful next disclosure would be narrower than another lifetime number. Modern Warfare 4 unit sales, launch revenue, Game Pass usage and a split between paid games and in-game purchases would explain how Call of Duty earns money today. Until then, $40 billion is a verified total with most of its composition kept private.

Team Vitality CEO Neo: "For Us to be a Global Leader Means Being a Contender at EWC"

Team Vitality remains one of the most influential and well-known esports organizations to date. The Paris-based org fields over 20 esports teams in various esports, though their immensely impressive results in Counter-Strike take center stage.  Being one of the organizations present at Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris, we managed to speak with Fabien "Neo" Devide, Co-Founder and CEO of the Hive, just after an interview with Mike McCabe, COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, at the opening press conference at EWC. Neo provided a ton of insight into the organization's participation at this year's edition of EWC in Paris. He expressed his desire for the org to perform to the highest standards, but also highlighted that rivalry is key to grow the ecosystem. Additionally, Neo gave strong opinions on the growth of mobile esports following last year's Vitality's takeover and merger with Indonesian side Bigetron, stressing the need for innovation and following ideas in the east, as much as the west.
