Monster Energy Launch Invitational
Overview
The Monster Energy Launch Invitational (also referred to as the Monster Launch Invitational) is a pre-season invitational tournament series in professional Call of Duty esports. It serves as the official kickoff event for each new Call of Duty League (CDL) season and the corresponding annual title, featuring all CDL franchises alongside selected Challengers (amateur/pro-am) teams. Organized by Activision through the Call of Duty League and sponsored by Monster Energy, the series holds S-tier or high A-tier prestige as the first competitive showcase of each new game’s meta, maps, and balance. It is contested in 4v4 mode on PC. The 2027 edition marks the second running of the series and the debut of competitive Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. History
The series began with the inaugural Monster Energy Launch Invitational in November 2025, created as a partnership between Activision and long-time CDL sponsor Monster Energy (involved with the league since 2023). It filled a gap for a high-profile pre-season event mixing franchise and Challengers squads, the first such CDL-sanctioned invitational of its kind in recent years. The 2026 edition (for Black Ops 7 / CDL 2026 season) established the core template: online, 16 teams, double-elimination bracket.
The series evolved quickly into an annual fixture. For the 2027 CDL season (Modern Warfare 4, released October 23, 2026), the second edition retained the 16-team invitational structure (12 CDL franchises + 4 Challengers) but introduced a group stage. It was announced in mid-October 2026 as the first professional tournament on the new title. Format adjustments reflected growing scale and the desire for structured early seeding. Monster Energy’s sponsorship has included branding, prize support, and cross-promotions (in-game rewards and consumer campaigns). The event consistently acts as a meta laboratory and storyline generator ahead of Majors and the Championship.
Format
The 2027 Monster Energy Launch Invitational (November 6–8, 2026) is an online event. It features a 16-team field: all 12 CDL franchises plus four invited North American Challengers teams (Huntsmen, Stallions, OMiT, and tBush Gaming).
The group stage consists of four groups of four teams each in round-robin format. Each group includes three CDL teams and one Challengers side. Confirmed groups include:
- Group A: Carolina Royal Ravens, G2 Minnesota, OpTic Texas, Stallions
- Group B: FaZe Vegas, Huntsmen, M80 Boston, Toronto KOI
- Group D (noted as group of death): Los Angeles Thieves, Paris Gentle Mates, Cloud9 New York, OMiT
Top teams advance from groups (expected top two per group based on reporting) into playoffs. Playoff details were listed as TBA at the time of group reveal, with sources projecting a double-elimination bracket. Matches use standard CDL rulesets (Hardpoint, Search and Destroy, and other modes) on Modern Warfare 4 maps. Prize pool is listed as TBD. The event is fully online with no LAN component.
Notable Editions
The inaugural 2026 edition (November 22–23/24, 2025) stands out as the series’ foundation. It was the first competitive tournament on Black Ops 7, featured a pure double-elimination format (Bo5 series, Bo7 grand final), and produced multiple upsets, including Challengers squads eliminating CDL franchises early (e.g., Team WaR over Riyadh Falcons). OpTic Texas dominated the upper bracket with consecutive sweeps before a dramatic 4–3 grand final victory. The event also marked the return of Twitch broadcasts alongside YouTube after a YouTube-exclusive period.
The 2027 edition is notable as the competitive debut of Modern Warfare 4. It expands the format with groups for better early competition and continues the pro-am mix, giving Challengers high-visibility opportunities against franchises. Group draws created compelling narratives, such as defending champions FaZe Vegas in Group B and a stacked Group D. As the first look at the new title’s competitive scene shortly after launch, it carries significant meta and roster-evaluation weight heading into the 2027 Majors.
Past Champions
-
2026 edition (Black Ops 7, November 22–24, 2025; online; $75,000 USD prize pool): OpTic Texas defeated Still Orgless (later associated with Paris Gentle Mates) 4–3 in the grand final. OpTic claimed $25,000. Key storyline: OpTic, as reigning world champions, opened the season with four straight upper-bracket sweeps before surviving a back-and-forth grand final highlighted by Huke’s 1v3 clutch. Runner-up Still Orgless earned $16,000 after a strong lower-bracket run. Third: G2 Minnesota ($10,000); fourth: Cloud9 New York ($8,000). Lower placements included FaZe Vegas and Toronto KOI (5–6th, $4,000 each). Several Challengers and lower CDL teams received smaller or no prizes.

Viewership & Impact
The 2026 edition delivered strong numbers for a pre-season event: peak concurrent viewers of approximately 144,400 (grand final OpTic Texas vs. Still Orgless), average viewers around 82,000–84,000, and roughly 1.46–1.5 million hours watched over ~17–18 hours of broadcast. This outperformed prior CDL pre-season events such as the 2022 Kickoff Classic. Broadcasts aired on the official Call of Duty League YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/codleague) and Twitch (Call of Duty Esports), plus co-streams and platforms including Kick. English was the primary language. Media value estimates exceeded $1 million.
Culturally, the series has solidified as the traditional season opener, generating early hype, testing new game mechanics, and providing Challengers exposure that can lead to roster opportunities. Monster Energy’s multi-year partnership amplifies reach through branding, consumer promotions (in-game cosmetics and XP tied to product codes), and cross-media activations. It reinforces the CDL’s ecosystem by blending franchise stability with open-circuit talent and serves as a key early indicator of title balance and team form ahead of international Majors. As a recurring S/A-tier fixture, it contributes to year-round engagement in the Call of Duty competitive scene.
