Blizzard Makes Changes to Overwatch Anniversary Event Challenges After Player Backlash

Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller shared an update on the Anniversary Event challenges earlier today via social media. The changes include reducing the requirement for the final challenge from 48 challenges to 38. Additionally, players now have until the end of the season to complete the challenge. Blizzard has also mentioned a special reward for those who have already completed it.

The revision came in response to widespread player outcry on social media, with some criticizing the challenge's grindy nature and others expressing frustration that they could no longer finish it due to a hidden limitation. Here's a closer look at how things unfolded and what Aaron Keller shared.

Player Outcry Leads to Overwatch Anniversary Challenge Requirement Reduction

One of the Overwatch 10th Anniversary Event's meta challenges, Decennial Hero, has been a hot topic of discussion over the past week. As the ultimate challenge of the three‑week event, it required completing 48 challenges across the Anniversary Event and offered a table flip emoticon‑styled Legendary Player Title as a reward: (/°□ °)/︵ ┻━┻.

However, there were only 24 unique challenges to complete. The remaining progress came from "Decennium Contributor" challenges, which required playing a total of 10 matches (with wins counting as double progress). These challenges refreshed upon completion, adding one to the overall tally. Essentially, players had to consistently play matches and grind out the challenge within a limited timeframe.

While this alone led many to criticize the challenge for its overly grindy nature, the outcry grew larger when players discovered that the Decennium Contributor challenges were capped at 20 per week — a detail that was seemingly hidden or not properly highlighted. This left many with no options in the final week of the event. Across Overwatch social media, numerous players shared their disappointment after falling just one or two challenges short of completing the meta challenge.

Now, with just over a day remaining before the Anniversary Event expires, Blizzard has delivered good news. The update not only gives players more breathing room but also rewards those who put in the effort with a special reward.

Blizzard to Reward the Grind With Double Table Flip Title

With the developer's response arriving just one day before the event's original end date, many players had already grinded through the challenges to claim the Table Flip title. Their effort will now be rewarded with a new title featuring a double table flip emoticon: ┻━┻︵\(°□°)/︵ ┻━┻.

The Overwatch Anniversary Event was originally scheduled to end on June 2, but following the challenge update, it has been extended to June 16, 2026, when Season 2 ends. According to Aaron Keller, these changes will take effect at 10:30 am PDT on June 2.
