Team Spirit faces Team Falcons for their IEM Rio 2026 Grand Finals spot
The dust has settled on the IEM Rio 2026 Quarterfinals!
The day started with a surprising Team Spirit masterclass that quickly dispatched MOUZ from Rio. What followed was one of the most emotional moments in recent CS history. Taking centre stage at the Farmasi Arena, the Godfather of Brazilian Counter-Strike, Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo, announced his retirement at the end of the year. The emotionally charged moment was followed by Team Vitality’s whooping of Natus Vincere.
Tomorrow, the remaining four teams will take the centre stage for the IEM Rio Semifinals. Starting with Team Spirit taking on Team Falcons for the second time in this event. In their previous clash, donk did not show up, and Team Falcons won the bout. Will the teams repeat the same fate tomorrow?
Let’s take a look at what the fixture has in store for us.
Can Magixx Save Team Spirit?
At the start of the year, Team Spirit brought back magixx to IGL and zont1x, replacing chopper and zweih for their 2026 resurgence. Unfortunately, the start to this campaign hasn’t been the best. Team Spirit has fallen from a top 3 team to #9 on the VRS leaderboard. But that is to be expected, especially given it's the first time magixx has taken up the IGL role.
At IEM Rio 2026, however, Team Spirit has looked a bit better. They did lose to Team Falcons in the Upper Bracket Semifinals, but took down Red Canids and G2 Esports to secure the Playoffs.
In the Quarterfinals, they faced MOUZ, who themselves are going through a tough time. But the thrashing that followed was completely unexpected. Team Spirit outclassed MOUZ. Moreover, the game plan and calling of Team Spirit was top-notch.
Now it remains to be seen if Team Spirit can actually take down Team Falcons.
Can Dead Team Buff Win Team Falcons Another Trophy?
Last time Team Falcons won a trophy, it was their last tournament with degster. Since then, they have added m0NESY and kyousuke, but not another trophy to their cabinet. And now, Team Falcons is reportedly heading for an IGL change, with Karrigan coming in to replace kyxsan. And IEM Rio 2026 has been the best this team has looked in recent history.
On their way to the Semifinals, they took down Team Vitality in the Group A Final in a closely contested match.
They also swept Team Spirit 2-0 on both maps. Going into the Semifinal tomorrow, Team Falcons has a solid advantage, with the team buff and their H2H record.
Head-to-Head
Since Kyousuke joined Falcons, except for the Budapest Major 2025, Team Falcons has had a 100% winrate against Team Spirit. The games do go close, but Team Falcons have always come out on top.
Strategically, both teams operate on a similar level, and a big part of the lop-sided result is the collective firepower of the Falcons with NiKo, m0NESY, and kyousuke outgunning the usual one-man carry of Team Spirit.
Can Team Spirit Take Down Team Falcons?
In their previous encounter, donk recorded the worst two maps of his career. The rest of Team Spirit did not cover up for the failing star, resulting in a swift loss.
Fortunately, donk has since recovered, putting up stellar numbers in the following games. What has stood out especially well in their Quarterfinal game against MOUZ was how well the rest of the team played as a unit. Magixx’s calling and utility were also on full display.
If Team Spirit can bring the same level of gameplay tomorrow, they have a solid chance of winning over Team Falcons, as they did during the Budapest Major 2025.
For the Falcons, their form and the numbers are in their favor. And as long as they do not choke, they will be confident in taking down Team Spirit and donk.
IEM Rio 2026 Semifinal - Team Falcons vs. Team Spirit Preview
The map veto will be similar to their previous Rio encounter. Spirit will veto Inferno, and Falcons will veto Overpass. Spirit’s choice might change to Dust 2, but Anubis remains the prime contender as their map pick. Falcons will likely keep Mirage to force a Nuke decider.
Prediction: If the firepower on both teams is active, the game will be decided by the quality of the calling from both sides. Since kyxsan and NiKo’s experience eclipses that of magixx, we expect Team Falcons to win the series.
The Falcons-Spirit game will be followed by Team Vitality taking on FalleN and FURIA in the second Semifinals. ESL will broadcast the IEM Rio 2026 Semifinals on Twitch/YouTube. Catch the action live tomorrow, April 18, starting 12:00 pm BRT // 5:00 pm CET.
