The Swiss Stage of PGL Astana 2026 is in the books. Aurora sent MongolZ packing in the final match of the stage, and now the last eight CS2 teams standing are preparing to make their run at glory on the big stage at Barys Arena. With $800,000 and a hefty haul of VRS Points up for grabs, the stakes couldn't be higher—especially in a year where Team Vitality have made a habit of winning everything they touch.

In this preview, we will be focusing on G2 Esports against Team Spirit, with the two sides set to clash on May 15 at 10:00 AM CEST / 1:00 AM PDT. Adding another layer of weight to this fixture: it's the final S-tier event for both teams before they shift their focus toward the biggest stage of the year, the IEM Cologne Major 2026.
G2 Esports: One Bright Light, But Is It Enough?
In the challengers' corner stands G2 Esports. It might feel strange labelling this organization an underdog, but in the context of 2026, that's exactly what they are. An unexpected roster swap earlier in the year has left the team in a transitional phase, where they are still searching for the kind of cohesion that earns you silverware at this level.
That said, G2 are far from a pushover, and the reason for that is one man: HeavyGod. The Israeli rifler has been nothing short of phenomenal at this tournament, delivering consistently elite performances and single-handedly keeping G2 competitive in their toughest moments.
HeavyGod's only underwhelming outing in Astana came against MOUZ, and even then, his teammates stepped up to keep the series alive, despite ultimately falling 2–1. HeavyGod is the kind of player who can flip a map on his own, and Spirit's preparation will undoubtedly have him circled in red.
The concern, however, is depth. One superstar carrying the load is a dangerous game plan at the quarterfinal stage of a major LAN. SunPayus, in particular, has been below his best at this event, and G2 will need more from him if they want to push Spirit to the limit. Championships are won by five, not one.
Team Spirit: The Donk Show Has a Supporting Cast Now
On the other side of the server sits a team many believe is the only realistic challenger to Vitality's 2026 dominance, the Russian powerhouse, Team Spirit.
Trophies have eluded them this year despite strong showings: a 3rd place finish at IEM Kraków (knocked out by MOUZ) and a runner-up at IEM Rio, where Vitality denied them the title. The year hasn't been without its rough patches either, with some stretches of form that fell well below their standard. But heading into Astana, Spirit look revitalized.
There's also a notable wildcard in play: head coach hally is once again absent due to health issues, with assistant coach Dmitriy "S0tF1k" Forostyanko stepping into the role—the same setup Spirit ran at IEM Rio, where they reached the grand final.
This also seems to be working at Astana, as Spirit went a perfect 3–0 through the Swiss Stage, dismantling The Huns, MongolZ, and FURIA in sequence. They look every bit like a team locked in and peaking at the right moment.
To no one’s surprise, donk led the kill leaderboard in every single Swiss Stage map. But what's more encouraging for Spirit is that this is no longer a one-man operation. Magixx is growing into his IGL role with increasing confidence, while tn1r and zont1x have periodically delivered the kind of clutch individual moments that swing maps.
The question mark remains sh1ro, whose methodical, slower style can sometimes feel out of sync with the tempo Spirit needs to sustain their best CS. If sh1ro finds his rhythm alongside donk, G2 will be in serious trouble.
The Head-to-Head Problem for G2
Let's not sugarcoat it, the recent history between these two sides makes for grim reading if you're a G2 fan. In 2026 alone, Spirit and G2 have locked horns three times, and Spirit have won every single one of them.
| Tournament | Winner | Loser | Map | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IEM Rio 2026 | Spirit | G2 | Dust2 | 13 - 11 |
| Spirit | G2 | Mirage | 13 - 7 | |
| ESL Pro League S23 Stage 2 | Spirit | G2 | Anubis | 13 - 10 |
| Spirit | G2 | Ancient | 13 - 9 | |
| IEM Kraków 2026 | Spirit | G2 | Dust2 | 16 - 13 |
| G2 | Spirit | Overpass | 13 - 8 | |
| Spirit | G2 | Anubis | 13 - 8 |
The lone bright spot for G2 in this run? A 13–8 win on Overpass at IEM Kraków. Spirit have been dominant across both Dust2 and Anubis, particularly the two maps that could very well surface in this series. G2 will need to steer the map pool in a direction that suits them, or history is primed to repeat itself.
Prediction: Spirit to Advance
Both teams arrive at this quarterfinal hungry for their first trophy of 2026, and with Vitality absent from the bracket, this feels like a genuine opportunity for either side to claim silverware before the year's biggest event rolls around. On paper, however, Team Spirit hold nearly every advantage—superior head-to-head record, stronger recent form, greater firepower across the roster, and a tactical setup that has clearly found a gear under S0tF1k.
G2 will need HeavyGod to deliver another tournament-defining performance while dragging the rest of the roster to their ceiling. It's possible, but it's a tall ask against a Spirit side that has looked sharp. Team Spirit are our pick to advance, and if they can carry this momentum through the bracket, they will have the winner of MOUZ vs Aurora waiting for them in the semifinals.
