The PGL Astana 2026 Quarterfinals kicks off with a much-anticipated matchup between two goliaths of the Counter-Strike scene – FURIA vs Falcons. The 5-day Group Stage concluded with the delivery of some familiar faces in the top 8, and some fresh faces too.

However, there’s nothing new in this corner as the headline match for the Astana quarterfinals delivers FURIA and Falcons, both on very different journeys, but still vying for their respective first trophy of the year.

Panther and Falcon Return to War in Astana

This matchup will mark the 4th head-to-head of the year between the two teams, with Falcons taking the last 2 in IEM Rio and BLAST Open Rotterdam, but FURIA overall still leading 5-4 across their history.

Both FURIA and Falcons have not had the smoothest of Group Stages, with visible bumps on the path by way of questionable player forms. However, there is no question that the superstars for both teams, Danil “molodoy” Golubenko and Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov are coming into the Playoffs Stage in red-hot form, building expectation for a monumental clash.

Falcons carved a path through K27, dropped a series against unexpected event dark horse 9z, and closed out against Monte and The MongolZ to secure Playoffs. Likewise, FURIA took down Monte, HEROIC, dropped a series to Team Spirit, and qualified to Playoffs via Gentle Mates. Neither side were without their hiccups, but FURIA certainly looked more convincing.

Finals Are NEEDED for FURIA

Coming into PGL Astana, the biggest talking point is the absence of Counter-Strike’s current ruling monarch, Team Vitality. While they toil away in Atlanta, the field has been blown wide-open for the rest of the attending teams to take a shot at a title now. Of the attending list, Furia and Team Spirit were the obvious contenders to surge forward.

MOUZ’s recent roster shuffle had thrown questions their way as to how they would perform (clearly unfounded as of this event). Team Falcons was debuting with new In-Game Leader Finn “karrigan” Andersen, so a bunch more question marks in that camp.

And then there were the teams that were good but clearly a mark below: PARIVISION, The MongolZ, Aurora, and G2. Suffice it to say, most considered the tournament ripe for the taking for Spirit or FURIA, depending on which team came with better form.

However, for FURIA, a sense of impending panic is descending on this roster. Since Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s announcement in Rio of his impending retirement at the end of the year, this team has been stumbling where they would have leaped last year.

Compared to their 2025 selves, they’re a shadow of their former cohesion and success. With Vitality not present, it’s the perfect moment for FURIA to seize on a much-needed title – one that would replenish the confidence the squad is sorely missing at the moment.

Are There Finally Enough Superstars?

It’s far too early to call any sort of success for the newest Team Falcons gambit, but so far there are some signs of promise. Most significantly, Team Falcons have made it through the Group Stage and into the coveted Playoffs.

The core has delivered their end of the bargain. Now, the hope is that karrigan can work his signature Playoffs magic on his new team and spin the rough straw into a respectable Playoffs showing.

Crucially, while their Group Stage performance was highly questionable at times, one of the undeniable bright spots for this team for this event is their superstar m0NESY. Heading into Playoffs in prime form, the hope is that he is Falcon’s answer to Furia’s molodoy, who’s currently also in magnificent form.

Showdown in the Barys Arena

The stakes are undoubtedly lower for Falcons then they are for FURIA, but make no mistake, a title here for either roster would be monumental – and the quarterfinals is but the first step towards it. Team Falcons and FURIA will face off on May 15th when we resume PGL Astana with the quarterfinals. This is not a series you want to miss.
