Nidalee is a unique champion in League of Legends. She is one of the few characters who can switch between two forms — human and cougar. This gives her a wide skill set, fast jungle clears, and strong early-game pressure. But she also comes with a steep learning curve.

This guide explains how Nidalee works, her strengths and weaknesses, and how to use her throughout each stage of the game.

Nidalee: Lore and Backstory

Abandoned in the great jungles on the border of Ixtal and Shurima, Nidalee in the form of a cub was found and raised by the pakaa — the jungle's fiercest cats. As she grew up alongside her cub siblings, Nidalee discovered that at times she would lose control of her own body, and morph into human form.

When she and her feline family first encountered the Kiilash — Vastayan hunters — her mother tried to chase them away. Tragically, she was wounded in her attempts. Before the hunters could finish the old feline, Nidalee sprung to her defense.

As she tore into them with razor sharp claws and fangs, the spirit of her heritage came to the fore, transforming her into something resembling human. The Kiilash hissed at the sight of her transformation, and she found she understood some of their speech.

Following her mother's death from the wounds, Nidalee assumed her role as the new leader, vowing to defend her adopted home against any who would seek to plunder it even as she continues to ponder her own origins.

Prowl (Passive)

Nidalee gains bonus movement speed while in brush. This increases further when she’s near a visible enemy or a marked target. When she hits an enemy or monster with Javelin Toss or Bushwhack, they become Hunted. She moves faster toward them, and her Takedown and Pounce get enhanced effects.

The movement speed bonus caps at 30%, but stacking is allowed from brush and Hunt effects.

Javelin Toss (Human Form) // Takedown (Cougar Form)

Nidalee throws a spear that deals magic damage based on distance traveled. The farther it flies, the more it hurts. Hitting an enemy applies the Hunted mark. This is her main poke tool. Landing it is key to bursting enemies.

When she transforms into Cougar Form, her [Q] becomes Takedown. This melee attack deals bonus damage. It’s stronger against Hunted targets and scales with the enemy’s missing health.

Bushwhack (Human Form) // Pounce (Cougar Form)

Bushwhack places a trap that becomes invisible after 1.5 seconds. Traps grant vision and deal damage over time when triggered. They also apply Hunt if Nidalee is nearby. Up to 4 to 10 traps can be active at once, depending on her level.

Pounce allows Nidalee to leap in a direction, damaging nearby enemies. If the target is Hunted, the leap has more range and cooldown is reduced. This is her main mobility tool.

Primal Surge (Human Form) // Swipe (Cougar Form)

Primal Surge heals Nidalee or an ally and gives bonus attack speed for 7 seconds. The lower the target’s health, the stronger the heal. This helps with sustained fights or quick clears in the jungle.

Swipe swipes in a cone, damaging all enemies hit. It has bonus scaling with both AD and AP.

Aspect of the Cougar (Ultimate)

This ability switches her between human and cougar forms. She unlocks it at level 1 and can rank it up at levels 6, 11, and 16. In cougar form, her basic attack becomes melee, and her ability set changes.

Switching to human form after applying Hunt resets this ability’s cooldown, allowing quick transitions for combos.

Early Game Strategy

Nidalee shines early. Her fast jungle clear and strong dueling make her a threat from the start. Land Javelin Toss from range to mark enemies, then follow up with Pounce and Takedown for a quick burst.

Look for early ganks. She’s mobile enough to sneak into lanes, especially when you use Prowl through brush. Aim to snowball your lead by forcing fights and stealing enemy jungle camps.

She can also solo early objectives like Rift Herald or Dragon if she has a small item lead.

Mid Game Strategy

As the map opens up, Nidalee’s role shifts to controlling vision and punishing overextended targets. Her Javelin Toss can chunk enemies before a fight even starts. Land one, and your team can often follow up for a kill.

Keep farming between fights. Nidalee relies on item progression, so don’t fall behind.

If you get a pick, call for Baron or Dragon. With your fast clear and Primal Surge to boost allies, securing objectives is easy when ahead.

Use side lanes to push and pressure, but don’t stray far from your team unless you’re confident the enemy can’t catch you.

Late Game Strategy

Late game is where Nidalee becomes weaker. She still has high burst, but she’s easy to kill if caught by crowd control.

Stay with your team. Don’t look for solo plays unless the target is isolated and squishy. Use Javelin Toss to poke, Primal Surge to heal, and Bushwhack to control chokepoints.

In team fights, protect your carries. Use your mobility to peel off threats. If you overextend, you’ll get deleted fast.

Nidalee Runes and Items

Dark Harvest is the go-to primary rune along with Sudden Impact. Most tend to go Sorcery second as it gives access movement-based runes such as Waterwalking and Celerity, along with much-needed runes like Transcendence, which allows Nidalee to access her full combo more frequently.

Start with Lich Bane into Sorcerer's Shoes. Then it gets greedy. Many players go Mejai's Soulstealer second as Nidalee is a very snowbally champion and you'll want to fully capitalize on that strength if you wish to excel at her. But it is of course, a very challenging rope to traverse. Die one too many times early and you'll miss the mid-game spike, where Nidalee excels.

Shadowflame is a tamer alternative, giving access to magic penetration, power, and critical damage. Finish up with a Rabadon's Deathcap and Void Staff for the full one-shot endorphin.

Nidalee Power Spikes

Early Game (0–15 min): She’s strongest during this phase. Her fast clear and high mobility let her control the jungle and gank frequently. Level 6 isn’t a huge spike since she starts with her ultimate.

Mid Game (15–25 min): Her Javelin Toss will be maxed, making it deadly. If she’s ahead, she can pick off targets easily. Not a massive power spike in terms of stats, but she becomes harder to deal with.

Late Game (25+ min): She can still one-shot squishy targets but struggles against tanks. If behind, her role shifts to healing and scouting.

Tips to Play Against Nidalee

  • Ward deep in her jungle early

  • Don’t walk alone if she’s ahead

  • Dodge her Javelin Toss to reduce her burst

  • Use crowd control when she leaps in

  • Punish her if she misses Javelin Toss

Final Thoughts

Nidalee rewards players who think fast, move smart, and land skill shots. She’s strong early, useful mid, and risky late. If you want to carry with her, you must play with confidence, not carelessness.

She’s not for everyone, but if you put in the time, League of Legends Nidalee can be one of the most powerful picks in solo queue.
