When King Viego's queen, Queen Isolde, was poisoned, Kalista left to search for a cure while Hecarim and the Iron Order remained to guard the king. By the time Kalista returned, the queen had already passed, and the enraged king imprisoned her. 

However, Kalista brought knowledge of a place she found, Blessed Isles, and the miraculous Waters of Life it harbored. Knowing that Kalista was the only one who could lead them to this place filled with riches, Hecarim convinced her to guide the king's fleet through the veil. 

When the isles' ruler refused to resurrect Queen Isolde, the enraged Viego ordered Kalista to kill them — an order she refused. Hecarim then made a decision, murdering Kalista before ordering his knights to ransack the city of its arcane treasures.

In the ensuing chaos and heat of greed, Hecarim did not notice the Ruination until it was too late. A blast of magical force tore through the isles, followed by the Black Mist, a hurricane that dragged every living creature it touched into its dark embrace.
