Katarina is an assassin champion in League of Legends known for her incredible mobility, deadly daggers, and devastating burst damage. As one of Noxus’s most feared killers, she excels at eliminating vulnerable enemies and turning chaotic battles in her favor. Discover Katarina’s backstory, abilities, personality, and the journey that made her one of the deadliest assassins in Runeterra.

Katarina: Backstory and Lore

Katarina Du Couteau was born into one of Noxus’s most powerful military families and raised by her father, the legendary General Du Couteau. From a young age, she endured brutal training designed to test her strength, discipline, and tolerance for pain.

Determined to earn her father’s respect, Katarina mastered the use of blades, poisons, and stealth, eventually becoming a deadly assassin. Although her ambition sometimes led her to make reckless decisions, each failure pushed her to become more skilled and disciplined.

Over time, Katarina earned the title of the Sinister Blade, becoming one of Noxus’s most feared assassins. Today, she continues to serve the empire from the shadows, eliminating her targets with unmatched speed and precision.

Katarina: Abilities Breakdown

Katarina Death Sworn

Voracity (Passive)

Katarina’s passive reduces the cooldown of her basic abilities whenever she picks up one of her daggers. If an enemy champion dies shortly after Katarina damages them, she also gains a significant reduction to the cooldowns of her other abilities.

This passive is what makes Katarina so dangerous in extended fights. Once she secures a takedown, her abilities can quickly become available again, allowing her to jump from one enemy to another and continue the attack.

Bouncing Blade

Katarina throws a dagger at an enemy, dealing magic damage before the blade bounces to nearby enemies and eventually lands on the ground.

The dagger’s landing position is important, as picking it up allows Katarina to trigger her passive and deal additional damage around herself. Skilled Katarina players use Bouncing Blade to set up daggers in positions that allow them to quickly engage or escape.

Preparation

Katarina throws a dagger into the air and gains a burst of movement speed. After a short delay, the dagger lands on the ground and can be collected to trigger Voracity.

Preparation gives Katarina an important tool for positioning. She can use it to create another dagger during an engagement, close the distance to an enemy, or prepare an escape route.

Shunpo

Shunpo allows Katarina to instantly blink to a nearby enemy, ally, or dagger. If she blinks to a dagger, she deals damage to nearby enemies when she picks it up.

This is one of Katarina’s most important abilities. It gives her exceptional mobility and allows her to rapidly move around a fight. Combined with her passive, Shunpo can be repeatedly used after takedowns, making Katarina extremely difficult to pin down.

Death Lotus (Ultimate)

Katarina channels for a short duration, rapidly throwing daggers at nearby enemy champions. Death Lotus deals massive damage and applies damaging effects to enemies caught within its range.

Her ultimate is particularly devastating when enemies are grouped. However, Katarina must remain still while channeling, meaning enemies can interrupt her if she is caught without a way to escape.

Katarina: Strengths and Weaknesses

Battle Academia Katarina

Strengths:

  • High burst damage.
  • Exceptional mobility through Shunpo.
  • Powerful reset potential after takedowns.
  • Excellent at cleaning up low-health enemies.
  • Can dramatically influence team fights when played correctly.

Weaknesses:

  • Very vulnerable to crowd control.
  • Relies heavily on daggers and resets to maximize her damage.
  • Death Lotus can be interrupted easily.
  • Difficult to master due to her fast-paced playstyle.
  • Can struggle against champions with reliable early-game crowd control.

Best Katarina Builds

Katarina’s build generally focuses on maximizing ability power, magic penetration, and burst damage. Items should be adapted to the enemy team, with defensive or situational choices becoming valuable when opponents have heavy crowd control or burst damage.

Since Katarina thrives on extended skirmishes and resets, prioritize items that allow her to survive long enough to secure the first takedown and begin chaining her abilities.

How to Play Katarina: Game Strategy

Farie Court Katarina

Early Game (0–15 min)

Katarina’s early game is all about farming safely and looking for opportunities to punish enemies who overextend. Use Bouncing Blade to farm from a distance and carefully position your daggers for potential trades.

Avoid taking unnecessary damage before you have access to your full combo. Once you reach level six, look for opportunities to roam and help your teammates secure kills.

Mid Game (15–25 min)

This is where Katarina can become extremely dangerous. Start moving around the map and look for skirmishes around objectives such as Dragon and Rift Herald.

Rather than being the first champion to enter a fight, wait for the enemy team to use important crowd-control abilities. Once an enemy becomes vulnerable, use Shunpo to enter the fight, secure a takedown, and use your resets to continue attacking.

Late Game (25+ min)

In the late game, positioning becomes extremely important. Katarina can destroy an enemy team if she finds the right opening, but she can also be eliminated instantly if she engages at the wrong time.

Stay near your team and wait for enemies to become distracted or weakened. Once the enemy's key abilities have been used, jump into the fight and look for your first reset.

Tips for Effective Katarina Gameplay

  • Use your daggers to control where you can engage.
  • Don't rush into team fights before important crowd-control abilities have been used.
  • Look for low-health enemies to trigger your resets.
  • Use Shunpo on daggers to quickly reposition around fights.
  • Save Death Lotus until you are confident it cannot be immediately interrupted.
  • Don't be afraid to disengage and wait for another opportunity.

Countering Katarina

Black Rose Katarina

When playing against Katarina, the most important thing is to deny her resets. Avoid giving her easy access to low-health targets, and save reliable crowd-control abilities for when she attempts to enter the fight.

Be particularly careful around her daggers. Katarina becomes much more dangerous when she can repeatedly pick them up and reset Shunpo. If she uses Shunpo aggressively, punish her while the ability is unavailable. During team fights, spread out when possible and interrupt Death Lotus immediately.

Key Power Spikes

Katarina Petals of Spring

Early Game

Katarina becomes more threatening once she has access to multiple abilities and can begin setting up dagger combinations. Level 6 provides a major power spike by giving her access to Death Lotus and increasing her all-in potential.

Mid Game

Katarina’s biggest strength comes from skirmishes and team fights where multiple enemies can be damaged or killed in quick succession. Once she has a few core items, her burst damage becomes extremely difficult for vulnerable champions to survive.

Late Game

In the late game, Katarina becomes a dangerous cleanup assassin. Her ability to reset her kit after takedowns means that one successful elimination can quickly turn into several.

However, enemies also have more tools to stop her at this stage, making patience and positioning essential.

Final Thoughts

Katarina is one of League of Legends' most mechanically demanding assassins, but mastering her movement, dagger placement, and reset potential can make her an incredibly oppressive opponent in the hands of a skilled player.

Her strength lies in chaos. The longer a team fight continues, and the more enemies fall, the more opportunities Katarina has to reset her abilities and take over the battlefield.

Learn when to engage, track enemy crowd control, and master your dagger combinations, and you can turn Katarina from a fragile assassin into a terrifying force capable of dismantling an entire team in seconds.
