Aatrox is a powerful champion in League of Legends, known for strong lane presence and high healing abilities. Play this hero effectively with our League of Legends Aatrox guide covering abilities, strengths, weaknesses, tips, counters, and more.

Aatrox: Lore and Backstory

Once an Ascended for the forgotten empire of Shurima, Aatrox was once the paragon for truth and justice. Described with wings like the 'golden light of dawn' and armor that 'sparkled like a constellation of hope', Aatrox led at the head of every conflict, defending Shurima with his fellow Ascended brethren.

When Shurima's warriors were called to aid against the rebellion of Icathia, they faced the horrors of the Void unleashed. Though Aatrox and the others eventually triumphed, it was not without great cost: the Ascended were changed from their long encounter.

When Shurima the empire fell, the Ascended began fighting with one another, eventually becoming known by another name: Darkin.

Fearing the danger they posed to Runeterra, the Targonian intervened, giving mortals the knowledge to trap the darkins forever within their weapons, sealing their consciousness in eternal darkness.

In time, the blade that imprisoned Aatrox was picked up by a mortal, and the darkin quickly seized upon to take over their mind, shaping their body into a crude imitation of his original form. However, the body was quickly drained of all life and the process had to begin all over again with a new body. Over time, Aatrox has taken over a multitude of hosts, in hopes of returning to his former form.

As he realized he would never be rid of his prison, he came to a different conclusion. If he could not be free, then he would embrace oblivion instead and perhaps, in destroying everything, he and the blade would also cease to exist.

Aatrox: Abilities Breakdown

Deathbringer Stance (Passive)

Deathbringer Stance has a cooldown ranging from 22 to 10 seconds based on level. Aatrox's next basic attack gains extra range and deals bonus magic damage based on enemy health, healing Aatrox according to the damage dealt. Hitting enemy champions or large monsters reduces its cooldown.

The Darkin Blade

The Darkin Blade has a cooldown between 14 and 6 seconds, based on level. This ability can be activated three times, each strike dealing physical damage. Hitting the sweet spot causes bonus damage and briefly knocks enemies up. Each subsequent strike increases damage, making it useful for quick bursts and crowd control.

Infernal Chains

Infernal Chains has a cooldown ranging from 20 to 12 seconds. Aatrox fires a chain that damages and slows the first enemy hit. If the enemy is a champion or large monster, it forms a tether, pulling them back unless they break free.

Umbral Dash

Umbral Dash has a cooldown between 9 and 5 seconds. It allows Aatrox to dash a short distance and resets his basic attack timer. Aatrox heals from damage dealt to enemy champions. This dash can be used during other abilities without interruption.

World Ender (Ultimate)

World Ender has a cooldown from 120 to 80 seconds. Activating this ultimate grants Aatrox bonus movement speed, attack damage, size, and increased healing. It also fears nearby minions and monsters, and its duration extends upon champion takedowns.

Strengths

Aatrox excels early in the game due to his strong lane presence. His high mobility comes from Umbral Dash, while his passive and ultimate provide significant healing and sustain.

Weaknesses

Aatrox faces challenges with high cooldowns early on and falls off in effectiveness later in the game. His unique mechanics require consistent practice to master.

How to Play Aatrox

Early Game (0-15 Minutes)

In the early game, focus on short trades using The Darkin Blade's sweet spots. Avoid extended fights until all abilities are unlocked. Consistently use your passive to maintain lane sustain.

Mid Game (15-25 Minutes)

During the mid-game, apply split-push pressure when team fights are not ideal. Only engage in fights when World Ender is ready, and attempt to flank enemy carries to increase your effectiveness.

Late Game (25+ Minutes)

In late-game scenarios, remain close to your team and rely heavily on your ultimate for maximum impact. Prioritize flanking enemy carries to quickly remove threats and create advantages in team fights.

Early Game Power Spikes

Aatrox reaches his first power spike at level 3, gaining access to all his basic abilities. Obtaining your first component item notably enhances trade potential. At level 6, his ultimate significantly boosts kill pressure.

Mid Game Power Spikes

By level 9, Aatrox's fully maxed The Darkin Blade significantly reduces its cooldown, allowing more frequent engagements. Level 11 further enhances his ultimate, making him highly effective in fights.

Late Game Considerations

Late-game effectiveness decreases due to enemy item counters. Reliance on ultimate World Ender becomes essential to surviving and impacting team fights.

Tips and Tricks for Playing Aatrox

  • Always position to land sweet spots on The Darkin Blade for maximum damage and knock-up effect, which can disrupt enemy positioning.
  • Conserve Umbral Dash for escaping, repositioning, or making The Darkin Blade easier to land in critical situations. Remember that your dash resets your basic attack timer, allowing quick burst trades.
  • Use your ultimate proactively to secure objectives or force beneficial fights. World Ender significantly boosts your healing, damage output, and mobility, making it ideal for engaging or turning around skirmishes.
  • Leverage your passive ability, Deathbringer Stance, regularly in lane to sustain your health. Aim to hit enemy champions or large monsters to reduce its cooldown, making it available more frequently.
  • In team fights, flank or approach from unexpected angles. Positioning away from your team slightly, yet close enough to quickly join the fight, can create opportunities by forcing enemies to overextend or underestimate your impact.
  • Manage your cooldowns carefully. Aatrox becomes vulnerable when his abilities, especially The Darkin Blade and Umbral Dash, are unavailable. Avoid unnecessary ability usage to maintain threat levels and deter enemy aggression.

Aatrox Runes and Items

Conqueror is the go-to rune for Aatrox, along with Triumph and Last Stand. Paired with Deathbringer's Stance and World Ender, Aatrox becomes a chaotic force that is very difficult to put down.

Aatrox loves ability haste as his survivability in fights depends on being able to consistently deal damage and heal. Sundered Sky is a powerful item as it further adds to Aatrox's burst healing. Spear of Shojin is another one, reducing damage taken while improving ability haste. The third core is typically Death's Dance or Sterak's Gage, depending on what suits the situation better.
