In March 2023, Valve announced the latest edition of the Counter-Strike franchise based on Source Engine 2. Counter-Strike 2 is the fifth installment in the Counter-Strike series and follows the beloved Counter- Strike: Global Offensive. Despite being based on the 2001 Source Engine, CSGO has successfully served the community for eleven long years. While the community still loves CSGO, it still has limitions and an update for the game was long overdue. This update comes with CS2. After teasing it during steam's 20th Annievarsary, Counter-strike's official Twitter might have dropped big hint earlier today regarding the game's much awaited release.

A brief history:

Based on Valve’s Source Engine, Counter-Strike: Global offensive was released back in 2012. In 2015, Valve introduced Source Engine 2 and along with the newer engine, they announced the reworked Source engine 2 versions of their existing titles. These titles included DOTA 2, Team Fortress, Portal 2 etc.

One game did not make that cut and that was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. And since, the CSGO community has been asking Valve and Gaben for switching the game to the latest source engine 2. Finally after nearly eight years of running on the 2001 engine, Valve announced Counter-Strike 2 with Source 2.

What does the new engine mean for the game?

A newer engine will definitely process the game better, reducing input delays. It also adds options for the developers to tweak the audio and visual experience for the players. Additionally, the new engine will bring significant improvements to the netcode, enhancing the overall casual gaming experience.

Valve has also announced additional changes to gameplay and map visuals in their official announcement. CS2 is currently in the final stages of the limited testing phase. Earlier this year, they announced the access to more players. Valve is continuously working on addressing the concerns raised by the community, while regularly releasing new maps, modes and reworking existing ones to enhance player experience.

What is the CS2 release date?

The expected release of CS2 as per the announcement was Summer 2023. Many speculated it would be 21 August, same as CSGO. With Summer 2023 coming to an end, we can expect the full release soon. Additionally, Valve has been regularly updating the game and constantly tweaking the game for better signifying the imminent release of Counter-Strike 2.

If the Tweet from the Official Twitter is anything to go by, The CS2 will release next Wednesday, 27th September 2023. With CS2 still being buggy, we'd have to wait and see how it performs upon its release.
