Memories of the 2010s bring to mind fond reminiscence for the freshly-purchased Steam Gift Card, ready to redeem in the virtual store in exchange for games or digital cosmetics. After more than a decade, Valve have announced their decision to end the physical card program due to scammers targetting the cards for use.

No More Resupplies

To be clear, the Steam Gift Card program itself isn't going anywhere. However, the physical Gift Cards, oft spotted in convenience stores, bookstores, and gift shops across the globe, are to be slowly phased out. The remaining stock of physical cards can still be purchased and redeemed on Steam whenever you choose to do so.

But Valve will not be restocking those cards. With an estimate for all retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026, the end of a simpler era (forgive my sentimentality) appears to be in sight.

Illicit Use Finally Sinks Program

First introduced in 2012, the Steam Gift Card continues to be a wildly popular way of introducing a little funds into one's Steam account for the purpose of purchasing digital goods on the Steam Store and Marketplace.

That said, the continued scourge known colloquially as scammers use said Steam Gift Cards (among other major brand cards) as their main method of stealing.

"As we have continued to put more and more restrictions in place, scammers have adapted. They continue to have an impact on Steam customers and other unsuspecting individuals. So, we've made the difficult decision to end the Steam Gift Card program at retail stores."

Valve have assured that the Steam Digital Gift Cards will continue to be offered and have even made mention of their intentions to improve the experience of purchasing Gift Cards.
