Shyvana is one of the most unique champions in League of Legends. She is both human and dragon, born with the magic of a rune shard burning inside her heart. While she can appear humanoid, her true strength lies in transforming into a dragon that burns enemies with fire and overwhelming force.

Her story and abilities make her a strong pick for players who want a balance of durability, damage, and area control. This article covers her lore, abilities, and how she functions in a match.

Shyvana’s Lore

Shyvana’s origin is unlike any other champion. She is not fully human and not fully dragon. Instead, she carries both within her. The rune shard within her chest grants her the ability to shift between these forms.

Her life changed when she saved the crown prince Jarvan IV of Demacia. Out of loyalty, she joined his royal guard. Yet, her presence in Demacia is uneasy. Many citizens distrust her dragon blood, and Shyvana struggles to be accepted as more than just a weapon of war.

Passive: Fury of the Dragonborn

Shyvana gains permanent defensive power from slain dragons. Each elemental drake or Elder Dragon her team secures grants her additional armor and magic resistance.

She also deals 20% increased damage to all dragon monsters. This makes her especially effective at controlling neutral objectives on the map.

Twin Bite (Q)

Twin Bite empowers Shyvana’s next basic attack. She strikes her target twice in quick succession, dealing significant physical damage. Both strikes apply on-hit effects and benefit from critical strike modifiers.

After using the empowered attack, her next two basic attacks gain bonus attack speed. Basic attacks also reduce Twin Bite’s cooldown, letting her use it more often during extended fights.

In dragon form, Twin Bite becomes an area attack. Shyvana swings in a cone, striking multiple enemies at once. This makes it effective in team fights and when clearing waves.

Burnout (W)

Burnout covers Shyvana in flames for a short duration. Enemies around her take magic damage every half second. While active, she also gains bonus movement speed that decays over time.

Her basic attacks extend the duration of Burnout by up to four extra seconds, making it last longer in battle. These attacks also deal bonus magic damage to surrounding enemies.

In dragon form, Burnout’s radius increases. This allows her to damage more enemies and maintain zone control in crowded fights.

Flame Breath (E)

Flame Breath launches a fireball that deals magic damage and marks enemies for five seconds. While marked, Shyvana’s basic attacks deal bonus magic damage based on the target’s maximum health. Against monsters, this effect has a damage cap.

In dragon form, Flame Breath explodes on impact or at its maximum range. The explosion creates a burning area that deals damage over time to all enemies standing in it. This makes it a powerful tool for both single-target damage and area denial.

Dragon’s Descent (R)

Dragon’s Descent is Shyvana’s ultimate ability. She transforms into a dragon and dashes to a target location, damaging and knocking enemies along her path.

The transformation grants her bonus health, increased attack range, and larger size. While in dragon form, all her basic abilities gain additional effects. She remains in this form as long as her Fury resource lasts, which drains over time.

She gains Fury passively while in human form and more quickly through basic attacks. Once depleted, she returns to her humanoid state.

Playing Shyvana

Shyvana works best in the jungle role. Her increased damage to dragons and scaling defenses from drake kills make her a strong objective controller.

Her playstyle centers on farming efficiently, securing dragons, and building towards her dragon form. In fights, she uses her durability to stay in the frontline while dealing sustained area damage.

  • Early game: Focus on clearing camps and building Fury. Use Flame Breath to mark jungle monsters for faster clears.

  • Mid game: Look to contest dragon spawns. Her passive rewards her heavily for securing these objectives.

  • Late game: Use Dragon’s Descent to initiate or counter-initiate team fights. In dragon form, her abilities deal damage to multiple enemies, making her a threat in large engagements.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Strong objective control due to passive bonuses.

  • Durable champion with scaling defenses.

  • High area damage in dragon form.

  • Good at both dueling and team fighting.

Weaknesses

  • Relies on securing dragons to scale well.

  • No hard crowd control outside of her ultimate dash.

  • Dragon form limited by Fury resource.

Final Thoughts

Shyvana offers a mix of durability and damage that rewards objective-focused play. Her transformation into a dragon makes her one of the most imposing presences in a match. LoL players who enjoy controlling neutral objectives and shifting the flow of a fight will find her rewarding to master.
