Tyson "TenZ" Ngo’s time with Sentinels has officially come to an end, closing a chapter of both his career and the North American VALORANT scene.

"I'm officially not contractually [tied] with Sentinels anymore... it might come as a shock to a few, but, yeah... turning a new page in the book".

Over the past few years, TenZ became one of the most recognizable faces in the game's competitive scene, experiencing incredible highs as well as some tough challenges along the way. Now, as he steps away from full-time competition, content creation and any other collaboration with Sen City, it’s worth looking back at what he accomplished with Sentinels, and what lies ahead.

From fill-in to cornerstone of Sen City

TenZ’s journey with Sentinels started unexpectedly. Originally a Cloud9 player, he stepped away from competition for a bit to focus on streaming. Then, when Sentinels needed a replacement after Sinatraa’s suspension, the team brought TenZ in on loan. What was supposed to be a short-term solution quickly turned into something much bigger.

At first, TenZ didn’t even know if he’d stay with Sentinels permanently. The team kept negotiations quiet, and it wasn’t until after they won the VCT Masters Reykjavík tournament that the buyout from Cloud9 was finalized. It was a big deal for the scene, with Sentinels investing heavily to secure TenZ full-time, showing just how much they believed in his talent.

Early success and rising stardom

TenZ’s impact was immediate. His mechanical skill and aggressive playstyle helped Sentinels dominate the international stage, winning Masters Reykjavík and making Sentinels the first North American team to claim a major VALORANT international title. TenZ quickly became known as one of the best players in the world, with his incredible plays and sharp aim drawing praise from the entire community.

Facing challenges and uncertainty

After that initial success, things weren’t always smooth. Sentinels went through a rough patch with a long period without any major trophies. TenZ himself faced some setbacks, including injuries and illness, which sidelined him during important matches. On top of that, contract talks created some uncertainty about his future with the team.

Despite these challenges, Sentinels re-signed TenZ in late 2023, signaling their commitment to keeping him as a core part of the roster. This was especially important as the organization faced financial difficulties, making TenZ’s presence even more valuable both competitively and as a brand figure.

Masters Madrid triumph and retirement

In early 2024, TenZ and Sentinels returned to form by winning the VCT Masters Madrid tournament. This victory was a big moment for the team, ending their long trophy drought and proving they could still compete at the highest level. For TenZ, it was a perfect way to cap off his competitive career, as he had already decided that 2024 would be his final year playing professionally.

Later in 2024, TenZ announced his retirement from professional VALORANT. He expressed a desire to leave while still performing well, rather than waiting until his skills declined. His decision marked the start of a new chapter Sentinels, who also saw another veteran player, Sacy, step away around the same time.

What’s next for TenZ?

Though TenZ has retired from full-time competition, he hasn’t completely closed the door on esports. He remains active as a content creator and has mentioned the possibility of stepping in as a substitute for Sentinels if needed. His partnership with popular streamer and YouTuber Kyedae has also expanded his presence beyond the competitive scene.

TenZ’s time with Sentinels was a defining period for both the player and the organization. From a surprise loan signing to becoming a cornerstone of the team, his journey included some of the most memorable moments in VALORANT history. While his competitive career has paused, his influence on the game and the community will continue for years to come.
