A few weeks ago, no one would believe Team Spirit winning 2024's first S-tier event. But last night, Team Spirit actively "donk’d" on Faze Clan to lift the IEM Katowice 2024 trophy.

The best of five series was cut short to three maps as Team Spirit’s absolutely dominated Faze Clan. Let’s see how the action unfolded

IEM Katowice Grand Finals - FaZe Clan vs. Team Spirit:

The series started with the expected map bans of Vertigo and Inferno by FaZe and Team Spirit respectively.

Starting on Nuke, Team Spirit secured an early 5-1 advantage, thanks to a 19-4 (K-D) start from donk. A NEO timepause before the seventh round helped FaZe claw back to tie the score at half time.

Unfortunately, the momentum did not help Karrigan and boys in the second half. They struggled to hold off Team Spirit’s full force led by zont1x and Chopper, losing the game 9-13.

FaZe’s Mirage defense was ready for donk and it helped them limit Team Spirit and maintain control over the map. But Team Spirit fought back and minimized the damage to a 5-7 scoreline.

They replied back stronger in the second half, securing map point early.  But FaZe pushed through until the last round only to get eco'd by Spirit to lose the second map.

The third map, Overpass, was one-sided. FaZe failed to secure bomb plants. Out of the 12 rounds in the first half they were eliminated 10 times. Planting twice and securing only a single round in the first half. Team Spirit easily closed the third map to secure a 3-0 victory over FaZe to lift the IEM Katowice 2024 Trophy!

Team Spirit’s Secret to Success

It is no surprise, the secret to Team Spirit's recent resurgence is  Danil “donk” Kryshkovets. But if s1mple’s career is a testament to anything it is that individual talent does not secure tournaments. It is the same in the case of Team Spirit, donk is definitely a prodigal talent, and we will come to him later, but first, we must talk about the rest of Team Spirit.

Alongside donk, Team Spirit features the following top talents;

  • sh1ro, a top three awping talent in the world
  • magixx an experienced CIS rifler/awper,
  • chopper "a CIS journeyman" as noted by Machine
  • zont1x, who is one of the most consistent young player, very stable, very calm and collected.

The biggest quality of Team Spirit throughout Katowice was to ensure they do not succumb to opponent's momentum. They displayed utmost perseverance and a streak of round loss did not affect them as much.

This was evident during the Grand Finals game against FaZe. On Nuke, when they went into the second half after losing a streak of rounds and the pistol, they immediately answered back. They won the 14th round and turned the tide on Nuke.

Similarly on Mirage, after securing the map point, the face immense opposition from FaZe, who brought it to the last round where Team Spirit were on Eco. But Spirit secured an early round advantage thanks to sh1ro's scout pick and they maintained the composure, did not over extend and converted the advantage into a round and a map win.

The team’s ability to continuously push for securing advantage early with or without donk is par none. Especially on Mirage, when Faze had donk locked up, Team Spirit were always in the fighting and did not let their opponents run over them.

All the members of the squad, even the IGL Chopper, secured crucial frags in crucial moments, made minimal mistakes, traded effectively, and played a simple form of Counter-Strike to perfection. Their relentless efforts and composure were awarded with multiple wins concluding with an IEM Katowice 2024 trophy.

Now let’s talk about the MVP of the series, Donk.

IEM Katowice 2024 MVP - donk

Donk’s name has been circulating for months now, but at Katowice, he solidified himself as one of the best players in the world.

Throughout the tournament, donk had been absolutely breathtaking. He put up an incomparable rating of 1.70 (post-Finals) to help team Spirit clinch the trophy.

He also became the youngest player to lift the IEM Katowice trophy and as an MVP. In the final series, donk put up 82 kills, with 124 ADR and a rating of 1.93 and “eclipsed all the previous IEM Katowice finals performances.”

His approach to the game and his ability to win duels was par none during the tournament, it was immaculate how efficiently he utilized his mechanical prowess to secure an advantage for his team.

Donk's playstyle isn’t particularly flashy, it is principled and is invariant. His repertoire is the basics of Counter-Strike executed to utmost perfection without mistakes. He makes it look too easy.

Moreover, he is selfless, the first contact for Spirit on multiple rounds, the first to go in and he consistently plays for the team making his impact that much greater.

If donk is able to replicate his performance and attitude for the rest of his career, he will undoubtedly surpass all the previous players and become the greatest Counter-Strike player of all time.

Team Spirit and donk's next expedition comes with PGL CS2 Europe 2 RMR. You can follow their journey throughout the tournament on Strafe.
