Ropz Brings Attention to Game-Breaking CS2 Movement Bug
Team Vitality’s CS2 Superstar ropz has discovered a game-breaking movement bug. This allows players to reach extreme speeds by exploiting the subtick system.
Let’s take a look at the bug and what ropz proposes as a solution.
Too Much for Z-block...Again!?
The current movement bug discovered by ropz and zer0k-z resembles an infamous issue from Counter-Strike: Source.
But the two problems are fundamentally different. The CSS issue was a result of game design that allowed players with perfect bhops to reach extremely high speeds; the current problem is an unintentional bug.
As ropz explains in the tweet, a higher tick rate allows players to achieve greater velocity while air strafing. In the subtick system, each movement key press, including +jump, is treated as a separate event by the game, effectively behaving like an increase in tick rate. This leads to players reaching higher speeds by spamming a movement key while air-strafing.
Ropz showcases this by using a config that spams ‘+jump’ while moving the mouse, allowing the player model to reach a max velocity of 366 in the video. Another player reported it reaching into the 400s, if not more.
While a perfect bhop is hard to pull off, an experienced player can definitely exploit the bug and outpace opponents to reach an angle faster than possible. Especially in CS2, where duels depend largely on positioning, this bug can pretty much change the outcome of the entire game.
The Proposed Solution
According to zer0k_z, a CS2 KZ dev, disabling sv_subtick_movement_view_angles should immediately fix the issue.
This setting sends view-angle updates as subtick events, effectively behaving like an increase in tick rate and allowing players to reach higher maximum velocities.
An alternative will be to limit view-angle updates to two per tick, bounding the maximum velocity and allowing players to experience 128-tick movement in 64-tick CS2 servers.
Ropz also pointed out how the game allows rebinding mouse positional information, which should not be the case for official servers, as it can be used for movement and auto-recoil scripts.
Is Subtick the Problem?
For the longest time, the community has raised concerns about the subtick system. While it is technically impressive, many of the game’s movement and mechanics issues over the past three years have been in some way or form related to the subtick system.
The in-game experience has improved since the launch, but questions have to be asked if simply switching to 128-tick would’ve ensured a much smoother transition and an improved player experience.
Counter-Strike has amassed its player base on the grounds of its amazing mechanics and in-game experience. For many, the CS2 experience lags behind CS:GO. Coupled with the cheating problem and lack of new in-game content, it is understandable why long-time CS enjoyers are slowly moving away from the game.
If Valve wants to retain the massive player base it has garnered over the years, they have to release meaningful updates that aim to improve the player experience and not simply add new cosmetics to the game.
