Riot Delays Controversial LoL Replay Changes After Community Backlash
Riot Games has delayed its controversial changes to the replay system in League of Legends following widespread criticism from players, content creators and members of the competitive scene. The restrictions were originally set to arrive with Patch 26.20, but have now been pushed back to Patch 26.21.
Riot confirmed the delay on Wednesday, October 7, after the announcement sparked backlash across the League community. According to the developer, the team is working on a solution to ensure content creators and coaches who rely on replays are not significantly affected by the changes.
“The announced changes to replays are being delayed to patch 26.21. We are working on a solution to ensure the creators and coaches out there that rely on replays are not meaningfully impacted by this change and want to have that in place before this goes live.”
What Was Riot Planning to Change About LoL Replays?
The changes were originally announced for Patch 26.20. Under the new system, players would only be able to access replays from matches they personally participated in.
In practice, players would no longer be able to open another player's match history and download a replay of one of their games. Third-party websites and applications would also lose access to replay downloads. Players would still be able to watch replays of their own matches through the League client.
Riot tied the decision to security changes aimed at restricting methods of accessing game data that can be exploited to develop cheats and other unauthorized tools.
Replay Changes Sparked Backlash From Players, Coaches and Creators
Much of the criticism centered on how the restrictions could affect the ways replays are used outside of individual matches. Players regularly use other people's replays to study champions, matchups, pathing and decisions made by high-Elo and professional players.
Coaches and analysts also raised concerns about how the changes could affect match reviews and individual player analysis. Content creators voiced similar concerns, particularly those who use games from professional and high-Elo players to produce educational videos or follow solo queue activity.
Separately, matches played before Patch 26.20 are already showing as unavailable for replay in the LoL client. Recent games from before the update appear as expired in match history, preventing those replays from being downloaded.
For now, the replay changes have been pushed back to Patch 26.21, which is scheduled to arrive on October 21.
