Riot Games has backed down from its controversial plans to restrict replay downloads in League of Legends. Instead of preventing players from downloading replays of matches they did not participate in, the developer will introduce a limit of 10 downloads per hour.

The decision was announced on Tuesday (October 20) in the notes for Patch 26.21, which releases on October 21. According to Riot, the new restriction will take effect sometime during the patch.

The change comes after weeks of criticism from players, coaches, analysts and content creators who feared losing access to replays used for educational content and match analysis.

How Will LoL Replay Downloads Work?

Under the revised system, players will still be able to download their own replays, as well as those belonging to friends and other players. The main difference is that downloads will now be capped at 10 per hour.

Riot explained that the limit is intended to stop automated applications from collecting thousands of replay files, while preserving access for players who use the feature legitimately.

"This change is necessary to prevent large-scale abuse of downloaded replays by bad actors using vibecoded apps to scrape thousands upon thousands of replays."

The developer said it chose a time-based restriction specifically to allow content creators to continue producing videos and other material without enabling mass downloads.

Riot also confirmed that it will monitor replay download activity to evaluate whether the limit strikes the right balance between accessibility and preventing abuse.

Riot Changes Its Plans After Community Backlash

The new approach is a significant departure from Riot's original proposal. On October 6, the company announced plans to restrict replay access beginning with Patch 26.20.

Under those rules, players would only have been able to download replays from matches they personally participated in. The announcement raised concerns among coaches, analysts and creators who regularly study high-Elo and professional players' matches.

Following the negative response, Riot postponed the changes to Patch 26.21 on October 7, explaining that it wanted to find a solution that would not significantly affect creators and coaches who depend on replays.

Two weeks later, the company has confirmed that downloading other players' replays will remain possible, although the new hourly limit means unrestricted downloads will no longer be available.

Patch 26.21 arrives on October 21, although Riot has not specified exactly when the new replay download limit will take effect.
