The 2026 VCT international grand final streak for Paper Rex has officially come to a staggering halt at VALORANT Champions Shanghai. After reaching the Grand Finals at every global VALORANT event earlier in 2026, the Pacific powerhouse was eliminated in Lower Bracket Round 1 by regional rivals T1 in a 2-1 series.
The loss knocks Paper Rex out of Champions Shanghai in 7th–8th place with $50,000 in prize money. Meanwhile, T1 survives to advance further in the Lower Bracket.
Trading Blows Across Lotus and Ascent
The best-of-three elimination series kicked off on T1’s map pick, Lotus, where T1 established early control to claim a comfortable 13–7 victory.
Unfazed, Paper Rex struck back forcefully on Ascent. Spearheaded by something—who led the map with 24 kills and a 1.60 rating—Paper Rex stormed to a 13–6 win to equalize the series.
The Heartbreaking Decider on Summit
The match came down to Summit, the decider map left standing after the veto. Paper Rex were well into the lead coming into the map, commanding a dominant 9-3 lead at the half. Paper Rex extended that lead to 11-5 in the second half, coming within just two rounds of victory.
However, T1 staged an unbelievable comeback. Led by iZu, who topped T1's scoreboard with a 1.47 rating and 25 kills, T1 rallied to win eight consecutive rounds.
Manifesting the 9-3 curse, T1 locked in and made the comeback to win the series 13-11, handing Paper Rex their first loss on Summit all year and ending their tournament run.
What 7th–8th Place Means for Paper Rex
Paper Rex’s early exit in 7th–8th place at Champions Shanghai marks a jarring departure from an otherwise near-historic 2026 season. Heading into Shanghai, the squad had a near-flawless global record, reaching the Grand Finals at every international VCT event earlier in the year.
Falling in Lower Bracket Round 1 not only snapped that impressive streak but also gave them their worst international finish since Champions 2024, where they were eliminated 1-2 in the group stage.
The collapse also highlights serious vulnerabilities in these high-stakes moments. Suffering their first defeat on Summit since Stage 2, on top of squandering a 11–5 second-half lead, points to critical execution breakdowns under pressure.
Ultimately, along with their poor Stage 2 results, this early exit shatters their aura of global dominance heading into 2027 and can also spark immediate debates regarding potential roster or strategic changes.
Looking Ahead
For T1, the comeback victory on Summit keeps their Champions Shanghai run alive. They are now set to face the winner of 100 Thieves and Nongshim RedForce. Should NS win the matchup, they will be up for another regional matchup.
For Paper Rex, the heartbreak in Shanghai marks a sudden end to a year where they had consistently reached the highest global stages.
