During Day 6 of VALORANT Champions 2026 Shanghai, a major technical failure ignited widespread debate during the Group A winners' VALORANT match between 100 Thieves and FUT Esports.

In Round 2 on Split, FUT player Doğan "xeus" Gözgen suffered a mouse malfunction while engaging 100T's Jordan "vora" Pulwer, leaving his weapon unable to fire. The initial ruling by match officials denied a round rollback, allowing 100 Thieves to claim the round and eventually secure a 2-0 series victory.

Following intense backlash, Riot Games issued an official statement attempting to address the officiating failure and underlying stage hardware issues.

Admitting Officiating Error While Maintaining Match Results

In their official "Competition Update," Riot Games acknowledged that an internal post-game evaluation revealed the officiating team had made an error on stage. Riot confirmed that a round rollback should have been granted following xeus's mouse malfunction during Round 2, explicitly taking responsibility for the decision.

However, Riot decided that the final match result would stand. The publisher explained that overturning or replaying the match after its conclusion would unfairly penalize 100 Thieves, who had played under identical stage conditions and bore no responsibility for the technical fault.

Discrepancy with Official VCT Rule 10.2.3

The handling of the incident highlighted significant confusion surrounding the official VCT Competition Ruleset, specifically Rule 10.2.3 regarding single-player gameplay interruptions.

Under Rule 10.2.3, an immediate round rollback is generally restricted if damage has already occurred in the round, requiring teams to play out the sequence before officials assess the situation during a technical pause.

"For all other interruptions to gameplay, both Teams must play out and finish the round. League Officials will evaluate the circumstances of the interruption to gameplay at the end of the round during a technical pause. Failure by a Team to play out the round to the best of their ability will not be considered as grounds to restore a round. Interruptions to gameplay that occur after a player’s agent has been eliminated from the round will not be considered.

Awarded Round Victory: League Officials, at their sole discretion, may award a round victory if an interruption to gameplay caused a Team to lose a round that the Team had already undisputedly won at the time of the interruption, as determined by League Officials at their sole discretion. "

However, the rule explicitly grants League Officials discretionary power to award a round victory or restore the round if a technical interruption directly deprives a team of a round outcome.

During the live match, on-stage referees declined to exercise this discretion, holding strictly to continue the game post damages. Riot's subsequent post-game admission that a rollback should have been allowed confirmed that the on-stage officiating failed to properly utilize the provisions of their own competitive ruleset, exposing a troubling gap between real-time referee rulings and official rulebook guidelines.

Stage Fixes and Mandatory Wired Mouse Protocol

Addressing the root cause of the equipment failures, Riot traced the persistent mouse interference to the custom metal desks fabricated for the Shanghai tournament stage. To permanently resolve the issue, Riot committed to replacing the metal desks with new units built from alternative materials within a few days.

In the interim, Riot instructed all participating players to switch to wired mouse connections to prevent further wireless signal disruption. While Riot acknowledged that altering peripheral setups mid-tournament adversely impacts players' muscle memory and settings, they defended the policy as the best available immediate safeguard.

Public Opinion and Player Backlash

Riot's official update failed to appease the competitive community and professional players. Members of FUT Esports voiced severe frustration, with Eray "yetujey" Budak boycotting the post-match press conference in protest, while teammate Efe "s0pp" Tur publicly blocked Riot's Global Head of VALORANT Esports.

Players also highlighted additional stage grievances, including unresolved audio issues and blinding reflections from stage lighting.

Across social media, fans and analysts expressed heavy criticism over Riot's late admission, arguing that acknowledging an officiating mistake after the match is of no use or help to anyone.

Furthermore, community members condemned the mandate requiring pros to abandon high-end wireless hardware for wired connections in 2026, pointing out that stage design flaws and administrative inconsistencies have severely damaged the tournament's competitive integrity.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the controversy at VALORANT Champions Shanghai underscores the critical importance of swift officiating and technical reliability at the highest tier of esports.

While Riot Games' formal admission of fault and pledge to replace the custom metal stage desks demonstrate a step toward transparency, maintaining the match result despite an admitted officiating error leaves lingering concerns over competitive equity.

As the tournament slowly advances toward its playoff stage, both competitors and fans expect these newly implemented safeguards to ensure that player performance — rather than stage hardware failures — determines the eventual world champions.
