Locke the Ashen Exorcist: Inside the Design, Lore, and Visual Identity of League of Legends' Newest Champion

Riot Games is no stranger to ambitious champion releases, but the latest addition to the League of Legends roster carries a particularly distinct energy. Locke, the Ashen Exorcist, is a Demacian AP assassin built for the midlane, and from the very first glimpse of his concept art, it's clear the design team had a strong, unified vision for who he is and what he represents. 

Strafe Esports was invited to a pre-release press conference and Q&A session with Riot developers, where the team pulled back the curtain on the creative journey behind Locke's character design, visual identity, and gameplay philosophy.

The Design Pillars

From the outset, Riot's art and design leads identified two core visual anchors that define Locke's identity on the Rift. According to the team, these weren't arbitrary choices, each element feeds directly into both his gameplay and his narrative.

"The nail that he's holding—that's kind of his primary weapon. A lot of his kit revolves around that. With 160+ champions, it's really important for us to make sure that he still feels and looks unique."

The nail serves as both a thematic and mechanical centerpiece. Rather than a conventional blade or magical staff, Locke carries a large, detailed nail as his primary melee weapon alongside a collection of smaller projectile nails stored within his casket. The casket itself, which is worn on his back, does double duty: it gives Locke an unmistakable silhouette while also housing the tools of his trade.

Anime Roots and the "Cool Factor"

Eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed that Locke shares similarities with a well-known and loved anime character from Jujutsu Kaisen—Nanami. Although Riot did not confirm the inspiration directly, the resemblance is still uncanny, and that’s not a bad thing. 

"I think there was a very strong desire to make him like a traditionally appealing character. I think our art lead in this one in particular does watch a lot of anime, so there are some inspirations from there that really helped shape him."

The anime influence is hard to miss once you know it's there. Apart from that, the developers also drew comparisons to iconic stylized characters like Dante from the 'Devil May Cry' series, noting the team gravitates toward a certain archetype of "cool."

"There's a lot of more almost like Dante-esque, Vergil-esque... he's like more of a cool, stylistic character. We think that relates really well to the target audience, which is midlane assassin players—kind of that high-octane, high-action moment."

Weapon designs went through numerous iterations before landing on the nail-and-casket concept. Early explorations included nunchucks, daggers on strings, and even a version focused on foot-based combat. It wasn't until gameplay designers aligned on the nail-stacking core thesis that the visual direction locked in and the broader aesthetic followed.

The Ashen Calcification: Visual Storytelling Through Design

Beyond the obvious stylistic flourishes, Locke's design carries subtle, layered storytelling directly onto his body. Two elements stood out to the art team as particularly meaningful: his misty cloak and the white, ash-like discoloration starting at his feet.

"The white shoes on the bottom is meant to symbolize that Locke pays a price for the power he uses, and that price is slowly calcifying or turning to ash some parts of his body, starting at the bottom. His shoes are very white and they leave this smoky effect."

This "ashen calcification" reflects Locke's inner turmoil. As a man who wields forbidden occult power to do what he believes is good, he is literally being consumed by it, inch by inch. It's a design detail that attentive players notice and adds resonance to his title: the Ashen Exorcist.

His glasses add another layer of intentional symbolism. The team wanted Locke to feel perceptive, as someone who sees through the lies and hypocrisy that defined his upbringing. And the glasses became a metaphor for that quality. There's also a deliberate reveal moment built into his animations when he removes them, exposing his striking eyes.

Lore and the World of Runeterra

Locke's backstory is rooted in Demacia's complicated relationship with magic and morality. Born into a family of occultists operating in the shadows of a society that officially condemns such practices, Locke's formative years were defined by deception and dysfunction.

"He was born into these lies and hypocrisy, so not really a fantastic environment. One key thing that he learned was that even though he was trained to hunt demons and the darker creatures in Runeterra, a lot of the cause of that darkness is often humanity—humans are making some of those worst choices."

This moral complexity is the heart of his character. Locke doesn't see the world in black and white. He hunts real evil regardless of if it wears a demonic face or a human one. And he does so with style, conviction, and a hint of irreverence.

Designed to Be Fair But Still Lethal

One of Riot's stated goals with Locke was to address a long-standing frustration with assassins in League: the feeling of being instantly deleted with no opportunity to react. The team's answer was to build a more telegraphed damage pattern, one where Locke must set up his burst across multiple steps before executing.

"One of the design goals was to see if we can make an assassin feel like they have to set up their burst damage to go through a few steps. So we're hoping that'll make him a little bit more fair to play, [with] higher counterplay in modern League."

This philosophy also shapes his secondary archetype. Beyond pure assassin, Locke carries skirmisher characteristics—on-hit interactions, attack speed from his W—that smooth out his combat pattern and give opponents something to read and respond to. It's a deliberate modernization of the assassin class.

Locke won't have to wait long to make his mark on the Rift. The champion is set to go live with Patch 26.13, dropping on June 24th, giving players just a few weeks to study up before the Demacian occultist arrives in the midlane. Whether you're an assassin main looking for a fresh pick or simply drawn in by the style and lore, Locke looks poised to be one of the more memorable champion releases of 2026.
