On the first day of the Lima Major, everyone was convinced that the tournament was going to be a complete disaster. Countless production issues made the matches unwatchable and the delays were ridiculous.

Usually, tournament organizers test everything ahead of the event, just to make sure that there aren’t any unresolved issues. But 4D Esports and Epulze lacked the necessary experience to organize a flawless LAN event of this magnitude.

However, compromises were made and solutions were quickly found to make the action watchable. The approach, which involved a minimization of the full-screen, partly ruined the atmosphere for the home audience. But at least the matches were good. And that was reflected in the viewership numbers.

Key Stats of The Lima Major

This Dota 2 Major was watched by a significant percentage of the Dota 2 community. The game only has around 8 million players left, but nearly half a million of them decided to watch the Grand Final.

At its peak, the event had 491.000 viewers. The average number of concurrent viewers was 262.000. That’s not bad at all for an esports event.

At the previous Dota 2 Major, PGL Arlington, the results weren’t that much better and that competition was a lot more prestigious for the simple reason that it took place in the United States. It had around 700.000 viewers at its peak and 305.000 average concurrent viewers.

To put the numbers of the Lima Major into perspective, consider the fact that CS:GO, which is twice as big as Dota 2 at the moment, has only had just 109.000 average concurrent viewers for ESL Pro League Season 17. This is an S-tier event that features many of the world’s best teams. But people still don’t watch it.

Meanwhile, in Dota 2, professional tournaments receive a lot of attention despite the relatively small number of total players.

The team that won the event was Gaimin Gladiators. For their victory, they received $200.000 and 400 DPC points.
