One final Bo5 to determine the first EMEA champion of 2024. G2 Esports faces against MAD Lions KOI in the ultimate showdown for the 2024 LEC Winter Split Championship. G2, the Kings of Europe; versus MAD Lions KOI; the ultimate challengers.

The 2024 LEC Winter Split Playoffs Grand Finals will kick off tonight (18/2/24) at 5.00pm CET. The two teams will take on each other in a Bo5 series to crown the first King of Winter. Let's take a look at their journey to reach the Grand Finals stage.

Setting the Stage

G2 Esports. A near-perfect run in the LEC Winter Split Playoffs thus far, only dropping a map to Fnatic. Considered by most to be the best LEC team in terms of consistency and talent, G2 has rarely failed to meet expectations. Last year they walked away with 2 of the 3 LEC Split Championships, losing only Spring.

Their legacy in the LEC is one of international challenges. Domestically, they are seen as the ultimate force in the region. With a full returning roster from last year, G2 is the only LEC roster to fully maintain their roster without any changes – thus, setting high expectations.

After falling in the first round to Fnatic, MAD Lions KOI have proceeded to absolutely prove every doubter wrong by making it all the way through the Lower Bracket. In their path, they took down GiantX, Team Vitality, Fnatic, and Team BDS. Now they are one Bo5 away from cementing their legend status in the roster’s first split in the LEC.

The disastrous collapse of the MAD Lions roster in 2023 led to a complete overhaul and rebuild, leaving behind only Javier “Elyoya” Prades Batalla as the sole holdout from the previous roster. In his former teammates’ steads, MDK brought in four ERL players to bolster their forces and regional support.

This led to many criticizing the upper management’s decisions, as the rebuild had also done away with what many had considered the core pieces of the former MAD Lions roster, including coaching staff and veteran members in the solo and bot lane.

In their place, MDK had placed former ERL players, and many considered that to be a downgrade in experience from the previous roster.

The LEC Winter Split Playoffs Grand Finals Match-Up

A large reason for MAD Lions KOI’s improvement in form and subsequent success on the Rift has to do with their mid-game. Noticeably their coordination around objectives and teamfights has massively improved, to a point where many of their series were won in the later game, closing out with crucial movements as a team.

G2 for their part, still remain one of the dominant teams in teamfighting capabilities, however, their threat stems all the way from draft flexibility, to individual laning prowess (fielding some of the best individual talents on the server at any given time in the LEC), and then bring in the coordination towards the end.

Moreover, G2 has the potential to outdraft MDK, perhaps not as significantly as other teams as the latter has shown more of a willingness to draft into off-meta picks as opposed to the rest of the LEC. Stylistically, it’s a good matchup, with both teams bold with their draft picks and decision-making in the early game.

LEC Winter Split Playoffs Grand Finals Preview and Prediction

Bartłomiej “Fresskowy” Przewoźnik has been making waves for his confidence in the Mid Lane, matching up incredibly well against some of the most experienced veterans in the LEC and coming up ahead. However, now he faces against the player many consider the best in EU - Rasmus “Caps” Borregaard Winther.

Furthermore, in the top lane Alex “Myrwn” Pastor Villarejo has been posting statistics and performances not seen since Sergen “BrokenBlade” Çelik’s own debut. This makes tonight’s battle extremely exciting, as multiple fated clashes are set to occur in the solo lanes.

G2 is favored to take the series, through sheer experience and pedigree. However, MDK are fast-closing and have been making a strong statement that experience and longevity does not assure one’s victory – as proven by the massive graveyard they have left in their LEC wake.

82% of Strafe Voters have chosen G2 Esports as their team of choice. The game will be a close one, with MAD Lions KOI coming in with a small momentum advantage and the team’s form.
