Evolving Rules and MR12

One of the most significant developments for IEM Sydney 2023 is the transition to MR12, a new format that has been designed after careful analysis of data from ESL's first CS2 online events. This shift brings with it some rule changes and adjustments to the schedule, all aimed at enhancing the viewer experience and competitive integrity.

Schedule Adjustments:

Day one's start time has been pushed back by 90 minutes, with best-of-ones now beginning at 04:30 CEST instead of 08:00 CEST. Day two's final program will be decided on day one, but play is set to commence at 08:00 CEST. These schedule changes are aimed at accommodating European viewers while ensuring that the tournament remains a global spectacle.

Match Duration:

Data collected from CS2 events has shown that the average map duration for big CS:GO LANs is around one hour. However, this can vary from 35 minutes in best-of-ones to 51 minutes in best-of-threes. While this data may not be entirely representative of high-stakes LAN Counter-Strike, it has provided ESL with valuable insights for further adjustments mid-tournament.
