Paris is now set for the most intriguing matchups of the Esports World Cup 2026 Counter-Strike 2 Playoffs. On August 20, 2026, the reigning Major champions, Team Falcons, will face off against defending EWC champions, The MongolZ, in a high-stakes, single-elimination Best-of-3 battle in the Round of 16.
Competing for a lion's share of the massive $2,000,000 prize pool, both teams enter the playoff arena with contrasting styles, distinct tournament paths, and a rich history of head-to-head encounters.
Team Falcons: The Ascent of a Superteam
Team Falcons secured their spot in the playoffs dominantly through Group B. They opened their EWC campaign with a convincing 13-6 Best of 1 victory over K27 on Dust II. They then followed it up with a clean 2-0 sweep against Astralis in the upper bracket semi-finals, taking Ancient 13-7 and Dust II 13-11 to secure their playoff seed directly.
The current iteration of the Falcons roster has transformed into a true global contender. With the addition of legendary in-game leader karrigan, the team now boasts incredible tactical structure and top-tier experience, which has already resulted in a Major.
Star sniper m0NESY has been in incredible form, posting 22 kills on Dust II against K27. Not to be outdone, superstar rifler NiKo dominated Astralis with 41 kills over the 2-0 series.

Alongside the aggressive entry frags of kyousuke and the anchoring of TeSeS, Falcons' disciplined CT-side makes them incredibly dangerous in high-pressure playoff environments.
The MongolZ: Unpredictable, Resilient, and Lethal
Opposing them is the Mongolian juggernaut, The MongolZ. They represent a fierce, highly coordinated playstyle that has consistently troubled the world’s elite.
The MongolZ fought through a challenging Group D lower bracket to reach the Round of 16. After an initial 13-7 Mirage victory over magic, they suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Natus Vincere, despite a strong 13-9 win on Ancient.
Under immense pressure in the lower bracket semi-final, they bounced back with a resounding 2-0 sweep of paiN Gaming, taking Nuke 13-10 and crushing Inferno 13-4.

The original core of bLitz, Techno4k, and 910, alongside new additions tikuak and DarkMeister, thrive on explosive coordination and supreme raw aim. AWPer 910 has been a consistent highlight reel, putting up 14 AWP kills against magic, while IGL bLitz put on a masterclass with 37 kills against paiN Gaming.
Although this new roster did not have much to show at BLAST Bounty Summer 2026, The MongolZ remain highly unpredictable and dangerous when they find their rhythm on the server.
Head-to-Head History
These two organizations have faced each other 5 times in official matches throughout their history. Team Falcons holds a slight edge with a 3-2 lead in the overall head-to-head match history.
| Date | Tournament | Match Stage / Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 12, 2026 | PGL Astana 2026 | Swiss Round 4 | Falcons | 2 - 1 |
| July 27, 2025 | IEM Cologne 2025 | Group A UB Semifinal | MongolZ | 2 - 0 |
| April 10, 2025 | PGL Bucharest 2025 | Swiss Stage | Falcons | 2 - 1 |
| June 15, 2024 | ESL Challenger Jönköping 2024 | Group A Decider | Falcons | 2 - 0 |
| April 24, 2024 | ESL Pro League Season 19 | Group B UB Quarterfinal | MongolZ | 2 - 1 |
The last time these squads met was on May 12, 2026, during the PGL Astana Swiss Round 4, where Falcons managed to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Before that, The MongolZ claimed a dominant 2-0 win during the IEM Cologne 2025 group stage, but this was at a different time, with both teams harboring different rosters, and cannot accurately represent today’s landscape.
The Map Veto Battlefield
The map veto process will be crucial in dictating the flow of this match. Team Falcons have traditionally utilized a permaban on Overpass and now Cache.
Over the last six months, they have displayed incredibly strong stats on Anubis (83% win rate) and Nuke (75% win rate), alongside a solid 67% on Ancient and 62% on Dust II.
Meanwhile, The MongolZ typically permaban Anubis (48% ban rate), which directly neutralizes one of the Falcons' strongest statistical maps. The MongolZ will likely look towards Mirage (where they boast comfortable experience) or Inferno.

Note: Cache has been excluded from the above infographic due to its recent addition to the active duty map pool and shortage of map data.
However, the decider map could easily fall on Ancient or Dust II, where both teams have shown they can put up double-digit map wins against tier-1 opposition.
Assuming Falcons get the first ban because they have the higher seed, here is how we see the veto going:
-
Team Falcons bans Cache
-
The MongolZ bans Anubis
-
Team Falcons pick Dust II
-
The MongolZ pick Inferno
-
Team Falcons ban Nuke
-
The MongolZ ban Ancient
-
Mirage will be left over as the Decider
Match Prediction
While The MongolZ possess the explosive firepower and unpredictable coordination to steal a map—especially if 910 or bLitz can start the series hot—Team Falcons' tactical system under zonic and karrigan feels too robust.
Add to that the fragging potential of m0NESY, kyousuke and NiKo, and Falcons hold a higher conversion rate in late-round situations.
Expect a highly competitive, blood-and-thunder series that pushes the distance, but the tactical depth of the European superteam should ultimately carry them over the line.
Prediction: Team Falcons wins 2-1.
