We assume Dota needs no introduction but the Dota 2 ranks do. The MMR (matchmaking rating) system is one of the essential features of the game. It helps players determine their skill level and progress. The Dota 2 ranking system is a way to evaluate a player's performance and is an essential tool for matchmaking and competitive play.

What are the Dota 2 ranks?

(Updated as of November 15th, 2023)

There are eight ranks in Dota 2, each with its own MMR bracket:

  • Herald (MMR 0-769)
  • Guardian (MMR 770-1539)
  • Crusader (MMR 1540 - 2309)
  • Archon (MMR 2310 - 3079)
  • Legend (MMR 3080 - 3849)
  • Ancient (MMR 3850 - 4619)
  • Divine (MMR 4620 - 5420)
  • Immortal (MMR 5420+)

Each rank represents a specific range of MMR, which is used to match players in games. Players with a similar MMR are matched together, and the higher the MMR, the more skilled the player is considered to be. Playing and watching the best Dota 2 Twitch channels are the only real ways to keep getting better!

Herald and Guardian

The lowest rank in Dota 2 is Herald. Players in this rank are generally new to the game and learning the basics. Anyone calibrating for the first time can expect to find themselves in Herald, unless you’ve really mastered the basics. If you develop more understanding in your first 100 hours, you might find yourself in Guardian where players have a bit more experience and a lot more salt!

Crusader and Archon

Next up is the Crusader rank. Players in this rank have a good understanding of the game and can play more complex heroes. It’s also worth starting to work on your teamwork and communication skills in this rank, your teammates are going to expect it! Nailing that communication is the only real way to advance to Archon and continue climbing the Dota 2 ranks!

Legend and Ancient

The Legend rank is the fifth rank and when things start getting really spicy. Players in this rank (usually, not always) have a good understanding of the game and can play at a higher level. Perhaps Legend and Ancient are the ranks to start experimenting with your hero pool, builds, and strategies. Creating a new strategy is a great way to go on that all-important win streak and even advance to the next Dota 2 rank.

Divine and Immortal

Once you hit Divine, you’re almost there. Players in this rank are considered to be some of the best players in Dota 2 and have a good understanding of the game. But Immortal is the creme de la creme of Dota 2 ranks. Reach Immortal and you just might find yourself competing in a DPC league!

Dota 2 Ranks Explained: How to Stay on Top

Dota 2 Ranks - Not Necessarily the Measure of a Good Player

The ranking system in Dota 2 is a crucial part of the game and helps players determine their skill level and progress. But the thing is, you’re supposed to enjoy playing the game. Delving deep into the Dota 2 ranks grind is all well and good but don’t lose sight of why you started in the first place.

As players progress through the ranks, they can face tougher opponents and gain more experience so keep your head in the game and take breaks when you need to.
