Cache Is Finally Back: One of CS2's Most Beloved Maps Returns After Seven Years Away

It has been a long time coming. After more than seven years away from competitive Counter-Strike, Cache is officially back.

The April 28, 2026 update for CS2 says it all: Cache has been added to Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Retakes modes.

The community has been asking for this for years, and Valve finally delivered.

Seven Years Is a Long Time

Cache was removed from the Active Duty map pool back on March 28, 2019, replaced by a reworked Vertigo. That decision did not go over well with fans at the time, and the frustration never really faded.

What made it sting even more was Cache's legacy: it holds the unique distinction of being the first community-created map ever added to the Active Duty Pool in CS:GO, a milestone that says a lot about how special this map always was.

For years, players waited. Valve stayed silent. Then, in May 2025, Cache appeared in the game's files, with the map's original creator FMPONE (Shawn Snelling) confirming that Valve had officially purchased the rights. The Chernobyl-inspired design was getting a full CS2-grade overhaul, and the community's patience was finally being rewarded, at least in theory.

The Signals Were All There

The wait did not end there, but the hints kept coming. In January 2026, the official CS2 social media account dropped a radiation symbol emoji, and fans decoded it immediately. Then, in April 2026, Cache won a FACEIT community vote with over 190,000 votes, comfortably defeating both Train and Vertigo. The writing was on the wall.

Valve teased the map's return with a profile banner update and a video showcasing gameplay on Cache's iconic layout. The CS2 community was buzzing. And on April 28, the update went live.

Other Tweaks and Fixes

The full update packed more than just one big announcement.

Dust II got a layout tweak: a Mid Box (Xbox) was uncovered to reveal a previously hidden jump spot, and yes, Valve confirmed it was intentional this time.

Office received a collision fix on tarps around CT spawn, while community maps Stronghold and Poseidon were both updated to their latest Workshop versions.

On the technical side, AnimGraph 2 received minor animation adjustments, and the Talon and Karambit knives are now held correctly during defuse sequences, a small but satisfying fix for knife skin owners. A handful of sound issues were also addressed, including a C4 equip sound bug and a first-person death sound that occasionally triggered incorrectly.

The Pro Scene Has Some Homework to Do

Cache joining Competitive matchmaking is a massive deal on its own, but the bigger question now is when it enters the Active Duty map pool for Premier and professional play. Valve has historically tied major pool changes to seasonal resets, and with Premier Season 5 reportedly on the horizon, Cache could be shaking up the pro meta sooner than most expect.

Teams are going to have to dust off their Cache demos, or start from scratch. Either way, one of Counter-Strike's most iconic arenas is back, and the scene is better for it.
