What are Agent Roles in VALORANT?

When VALORANT was first released, the agent roles were job descriptors that roughly placed each agent into a category that defined what they should be doing.

Over time, the lines between the roles blurred and the majority of new releases now represent more of a hybrid between two roles; though they are still categorized under a single role.

The 4 agent roles are: Duelist, Initiator, Controller and Sentinel.

Duelist

Specializing in taking duels, each Duelist comes equipped with abilities that skew 1-on-1 fights in their favor. On Attack, Duelists are expected to take point for their team, seizing space and finding picks. On Defense, they look to find early advantages through opening picks.

Recommendation for Starting Out

Duelists can be a stressful role with the team's expectations for you to put up high numbers. A Duelist's role is first and foremost to take space for the team, putting up numbers is a byproduct of that.

We recommend Waylay if you're looking for a dive-style agent or Phoenix if you have a more methodical approach.

Initiator

Initiators are facilitators, empowering their team through the clearing of space and seizing of angles. They typically specialize in setting up favorable fights, trading the self-sufficiency for stronger set-up.

Recommendation for Starting Out

Initiator can seem daunting with so much utility and power in your hands. Focus on communicating the area you affect with your utility and think about what use is. Initiator kits are incredibly powerful but they need intention and thought behind every utility to get value.

We recommend Fade or Gekko when you're starting out. Both Initiators have forgiving kits with a lower skill floor allowing you to take your time and learn the role without being punished too hard.

Controller

Controllers enable their team to seize space through the cutting of sightlines. On Attack, this means identifying the major chokepoints and dangerous sightlines, and smoking them off. On Defense, Controllers typically smoke off chokepoints to make entryways more defensible.

Recommendation for Starting Out

Controller is a relatively straightforward role with a lot of nuance as the skill level goes up. For now, focus on communicating with your team when committing so you know when to provide smokes.

We recommend Clove or Brimstone if you love taking duels. Simple kits with a lot of power behind them. Otherwise, Omen is our pick for best-in-class. When mastered, Omen is a pick that remains effective from Iron to Radiant.

Sentinel

Sentinels are the defensive bastions for their team. Each Sentinel is equipped with stalling power to slow down Attackers but that power is traded by needing set-up time to place their utility.

Recommendation for Starting Out

Sentinels can oftentimes seem passive, but its a role that rewards patience and perseverance. On Defense, Sentinels are the team's pillar, oftentimes allowing their teammates to space and time to find results elsewhere. On Attack, they often function as the counterpart to their Duelist, keeping on to space on the other side of the map to their team.

We recommend Killjoy if you enjoy a more lock-down-the-site playstyle or Cypher if you prefer playing off information. Both agents have fairly forgiving kits that give you the space to learn.
