Counter-Strike 2 HE Grenade: Key Features and Tactical Insights

The HE Grenade in Counter-Strike is a simple but powerful tool. It delivers explosive damage over a wide area and plays a key role in both offense and defense. While players can only carry one at a time, proper use of the grenade can change the outcome of a round. This article breaks down how the HE Grenade functions, its properties, and how to use it effectively.

HE stands for High Explosive. The grenade is a small device filled with explosives that detonates shortly after being thrown. It creates a blast that damages players and objects within a set radius.

The HE Grenade is designed for use in multiplayer matches, but it also appears in Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes, where it behaves a bit differently.

How It Works

Once thrown, the grenade has a short fuse. When it explodes, it deals damage based on how close targets are to the blast. Players right next to it take more damage than those farther away. The grenade also destroys objects like breakable doors and vents if they’re in range.

In older versions of Counter-Strike, the explosion could go through walls. This changed in later titles, where walls now block the blast.

Differences by Game

The grenade’s damage varies slightly across Counter-Strike titles. It causes the most damage in Condition Zero and less in Global Offensive, especially against armored players. For example, in Global Offensive, the maximum damage to an armored enemy is 57.

The grenade model also changes with each version:

  • Counter-Strike and Condition Zero: Based on the M7A3 CS grenade

  • Source: Modeled after the M26

  • Global Offensive: Modeled after the M67

Deleted Scenes Version

In Deleted Scenes, the HE Grenade is stronger. It can gib enemies and even the player if thrown too close. NPCs using the grenade are more passive—they throw from cover and often use pistols as backup. They appear to have unlimited grenades but deal less damage than the player’s version.

The player can hold up to three grenades in Deleted Scenes, unlike the one-limit in multiplayer. The grenade also causes knockback, which doesn’t happen in standard multiplayer modes.

Damage depends on how close a player is to the blast. The area from the waist up takes the most damage. In Global Offensive, the grenade has a blast radius of 384 units, about the height of six crates stacked.

Throwing distance and player speed change when holding the grenade. In Global Offensive, players run at 245 units per second while holding it. Movement is slightly faster in earlier games.

Use It Properly

The HE Grenade is not always a direct damage tool. It can be used to control space, soften enemies, or flush out campers. Timing and positioning matter.

Throwing the grenade at the start of a round is risky. You’re exposed and can’t fight while holding it. It’s better to use it once you know enemy positions or after some early trades.

If enemies are behind cover and low on health, a grenade can finish them off without risking your life in close combat. It’s also good for forcing opponents out of hiding.

Common Tactical Uses

  • Clearing hiding spots: Toss it into corners or behind crates.

  • Supporting a push: Throw it into a chokepoint just before teammates rush in.

  • Defensive hold: Use it to stop or delay an enemy rush.

  • Combo with smokes: In Counter-Strike 2, volumetric smokes can be briefly broken apart with the HE explosion, granting a brief window of visibility.

  • Anti-camper setup: Toss a grenade into one entrance, then enter through another.

  • Fake attacks: Throw an HE in one area to trick the enemy into thinking you're pushing there.

  • Displace weapons: Counter-Strike's physics allow HE explosions to move dropped weapons, which can deny enemies from picking them up.

Effective Teamplay

You can’t carry more than one grenade, but your teammates can help. Coordinated throws into a tight group of enemies can deal major damage or get early kills. This works best on pistol rounds when enemies have no armor.

A direct hit deals 2 damage (1 with armor) and slows the enemy. That small hit makes them more likely to be caught in the blast, increasing overall damage.

HE Grenades can destroy some doors in CS2. This helps speed up rushes, but be aware the enemy can also use this path.

Caution with Usage

Be careful when using the grenade near teammates, especially with friendly fire on. Mis-throws can hurt or even kill your own team. In earlier games, bots often throw grenades into walls or teammates, so don’t stand too close to them.

Also, don’t use HE Grenades around hostages. In older versions of Counter-Strike, a grenade can instantly kill a hostage if it lands too close.

If you’re spotted and under fire, using a grenade can create a distraction. The explosion can give you a few seconds to reposition or retreat.

Achievements

In Source and Global Offensive, players can earn achievements with the HE Grenade. Examples include killing three enemies with one grenade or surviving heavy grenade damage.

Trivia

counterstrike-he-grenade

  • The HE Grenade in Source uses the M26/M61 model but shows a different grenade (Mk2) in icons.

  • The Pipe Bomb from Left 4 Dead is based on the Source HE Grenade, sharing code and sound files.

  • It's possible to get a kill with just one grenade in Global Offensive if you hit an unarmored enemy directly and the blast deals maximum damage. This is rare but technically possible.

Final Thoughts

The Counter-Strike HE Grenade is a versatile tool. It works best when used with good timing and map knowledge. Whether you’re softening enemies, clearing campers, or supporting your team, the grenade can tip the balance in your favor. Use it wisely.
