CS2 ELO Explained: How the Rating System Works

CS2 ELO is the number players use to describe their skill rating in Counter-Strike 2's Premier mode. Valve calls it "CS Rating" officially, but the community calls it ELO, and that's the term you'll see throughout this guide. The two mean the same thing in the context of CS2 Premier.

If you want to know how ELO goes up and down, where you sit compared to other players, or what your rating actually means, this guide covers all of it.

What is ELO in CS2?

ELO is a rating system originally developed for chess. It assigns each player a number that reflects their skill relative to other players. When you beat someone rated higher than you, your rating goes up more. When you lose to someone rated lower, it drops more.

In CS2, the Premier mode uses this concept under the name CS Rating. It starts at 1,000 for new players and can go above 40,000 at the top end, though very few players reach those numbers. For a full breakdown of how the Premier system is structured, see the CS2 Premier rating system explained guide. If you haven't played Premier yet, check how to unlock CS2 Premier first.

FACEIT also uses ELO for its competitive platform, but it runs on a different scale and separate infrastructure. The two ratings are not directly comparable. More on that at the end of this guide.

How CS2 ELO (CS Rating) works

The core mechanic is straightforward. You gain ELO when you win a Premier match and lose ELO when you lose. The amount gained or lost is not fixed. It depends on the rating gap between the two teams.

Beating a higher-rated team gives you more ELO than beating a team at the same rating. Losing to a lower-rated team costs you more than losing to a higher-rated one. This is the same logic chess and most other skill-rating systems use.

Win streaks trigger a bonus multiplier, so several consecutive wins push your rating up faster. Losing streaks work in the same direction, making each loss cost more. Breaking a losing streak is one of the most direct ways to slow a rating decline.

Your individual performance (kills, deaths, impact) has a small effect on the amount gained or lost, but the match result is the dominant factor. Playing well in a loss still results in a rating drop.

Your first 10 Premier matches are placement matches. These have larger ELO swings and set your starting rating for the season. Valve has not published the exact formula. Community analysis from Leetify puts the typical swing per match between 50 and 200 ELO, depending on the team rating gap. For a broader look at how CS2's rating systems compare, see the CS2 ranking system guide. Note that Competitive mode uses separate ranks (Silver, Gold Nova, etc.) and is a completely different system from Premier CS Rating.

CS2 ELO to CS:GO rank conversion table

This is what most players searching "cs2 elo to csgo rank" are looking for. The table below maps each CS Rating tier to its approximate CS:GO rank equivalent. These equivalents are community approximations based on Leetify distribution data. Valve has never published an official conversion. For more context on how CS2 rank tiers work, see CS2 ranks explained.

If you're coming from CS:GO and want to understand how the old ELO formula compared, how CS:GO ELO works is worth reading alongside this table.

CS2 Premier CS Rating (ELO)

Silver I – Silver III

5,000 – 9,999

Light Blue

Silver IV – Gold Nova I

10,000 – 14,999

Blue

Gold Nova II – Master Guardian I

15,000 – 19,999

Purple

Master Guardian II – Master Guardian Elite

20,000 – 24,999

Pink

Distinguished Master Guardian – Legendary Eagle

25,000 – 29,999

Red

Legendary Eagle Master – Supreme Master First Class

30,000+

Gold

Global Elite

Reaching 10,000 puts you in the Blue tier, which maps to roughly Gold Nova II through Master Guardian I in CS:GO terms. At 15,000 you enter Purple, the approximate equivalent of Master Guardian Elite. The Gold tier at 30,000+ represents the Global Elite bracket and fewer than 0.01% of active players reach it.

CS2 ELO distribution, where do most players rank?

Based on Leetify and Tradeit data, the current distribution of active Premier players across rating tiers looks like this:

CS Rating tier

Approximate share of players

Gray (0–4,999)

~18%

Light Blue (5,000–9,999)

~35%

Blue (10,000–14,999)

~28%

Purple (15,000–19,999)

~6%

Pink (20,000–24,999)

~0.6%

Red (25,000–29,999)

~0.1%

Gold (30,000+)

<0.01%

The largest single group sits in Light Blue at roughly 35% of players. The average active player rating falls in the 8,000–12,000 range.

The lower end of the distribution is partly inflated by players who are still completing or have recently completed placement matches. New players entering Premier typically land in Gray or low Light Blue before their rating stabilizes. Distribution data shifts each season after soft resets, so these percentages change over time.

CS2 ELO benchmarks, what does your rating actually mean?

The numbers below each carry a rough meaning in terms of where you sit relative to the player base.

CS Rating benchmark

What it means

5,000 ELO

You've finished placements and settled into the lower tiers. Most new players land near here. Work on aim, movement, and map basics.

10,000 ELO

Solidly average competitive player. You understand the game's core mechanics and hold your own in most matches.

15,000 ELO

Above average. You're playing with players who have strong game sense and map knowledge. Communication matters at this level.

20,000 ELO

High-level play. You're in the top few percent of active Premier players. Most casual grinders peak around here.

25,000 ELO

Elite. Few players consistently play at this rating without a coordinated team or a serious time investment.

30,000+ ELO

Top of the leaderboard. At this range you're playing against pro-level skill groups. Less than 1% of the player base reaches it.

Maximum ELO difference to queue together in CS2

CS2 Premier limits how large the rating gap can be within a party before the queue refuses to start. The current limit is approximately 5,000 ELO for a duo. In a full 5-player stack, the total spread can be up to around 10,000 ELO across the group, since the restriction applies to the gap between the lowest and highest rated player in the lobby.

If you try to queue with a friend and the gap exceeds the limit, the matchmaking screen shows an error and the queue won't start. No workaround exists within Premier. One player needs to raise or lower their rating through solo play until the gap falls within range.

This limit has changed across Premier seasons, so if you're reading this after a major update, check the official CS2 patch notes or the CS2 community wiki to confirm the current threshold.

How to check your ELO in CS2

  1. In-game profile: Open CS2 and go to your player profile on the main menu. Your CS Rating appears under your Premier rank icon.
  2. Leetify: Go to Leetify.com, enter your Steam profile name or URL, and view your current rating, rating history, and match-by-match breakdowns.
  3. CSSTATS.GGCSSTATS.GG tracks CS Rating and match data. Search by Steam name or paste your profile URL.
  4. Steam profile: If you've set your CS2 game data to Public in your Steam privacy settings, your CS Rating is visible on your public Steam profile. This also allows third-party trackers to pull your stats automatically.

Common CS2 ELO questions, quick answers

Do you lose ELO if you get kicked in CS2?

Yes. Getting kicked counts as a loss for ELO purposes. You lose rating as if you played the full match and lost. There is no mechanic that protects your rating from a kick.

How much ELO do you lose for abandoning in CS2?

Abandoning a match gives you a larger ELO penalty than a standard loss. The deduction is roughly equivalent to losing by a wide margin. You also receive a matchmaking cooldown on top of the ELO loss. Valve does not publish the exact number.

What is the highest ELO in CS2?

The top-rated players globally sit between 35,000 and 40,000+ CS Rating. The current leaderboard is visible in-game under the Premier tab.

What is the lowest ELO in CS2?

The floor is 1,000 CS Rating. You cannot drop below it. Every new Premier season also starts players back at 1,000 before placement matches.

Does ELO reset every CS2 season?

Valve uses a soft reset between Premier seasons. Your rating is compressed toward the average rather than wiped to zero. After the reset, you play 10 placement matches before a visible rating appears. Your pre-reset rating influences where you land after calibration.

CS2 also has other ranking modes. The CS2 Wingman ranks guide covers the separate ELO system used in 2v2 Wingman mode.

FACEIT ELO vs CS2 Premier ELO, key differences

FACEIT runs its own competitive platform with its own ELO system. Players use both platforms, so it's worth knowing what separates them.
