Valorant, Riot Games' first person shooter, have an array of game modes, each catering to different player preferences. This article will go over the details of all Valorant game modes, aiming to assist both newcomers and seasoned players in understanding the essence of each mode.

Unrated: The starting point

The Unrated Match serves as the entry point for all VALORANT players. It's a 24-round encounter where attackers and defenders strive for victory. With 13 rounds needed to win, Unrated is a great space for new players to learn, explore maps, and experiment with agents. Balancing in-game economy adds a layer of strategy to this introductory mode.

Competitive: The ascent to ranks

Once players surpass Unrated, the Competitive Match awaits. Unlockable at level 20, it amplifies the competitive spirit. After five placement matches, Rank Rating (RR) fluctuations and the possibility of overtime create an environment where every decision matters. This mode caters to those seeking a serious competitive experience.

Swift Play: A quicker pace

Introduced in 2023, Swift Play maintains the competitive feel but with a quicker pace. Eight rounds split into two halves, with the first team reaching five rounds emerging victorious. Swift Play minimizes economy management, providing a casual environment for a swift warm-up or a brief gaming session.

Spike rush: Casual fun

Spike Rush adds a touch of casual mayhem to VALORANT. Two halves of three rounds each, with the first to secure four rounds winning. This mode grants each player a spike every round and standardizes weapons, fostering a fun and experimental atmosphere.

Deathmatch is a 12-player free-for-all where the first to reach 40 kills wins. Stripped of abilities, players wield their weapon of choice, refreshing it with each kill. Lasting 10 minutes, Deathmatch is a platform for individual skill mastery.

Escalation: Lighthearted weapon challenge

Escalation is a 5v5 weapon challenge where progression depends on eliminations. With 12 weapons to conquer, it becomes a lighthearted space for camaraderie and experimentation.

Is VALORANT Crossplay? PC, PS5, Xbox & Mobile Explained (2026)

VALORANT does not offer crossplay between PC and console. This means that PC players can only match and play against other PC players, and console players (PS5 and Xbox) players can only match and play against other console players. While there is no crossplay in VALORANT, the game does support cross progression, which means that your account, skins, and any other form of progress carry from one platform to the other (from PC to console, and vice versa).
